Default 92 EZGO, gears or motor best initial investment

Been reading for a while but now that I am the proud owner of a 92 EZGO I will joing the chat for the first time.

I am looking to see what is the best starting investment. High speed gears or an upgraded motor. The cart currently goes about 10-11 mph. I will be mainly driving it on relatively flat ground (minor incline/declines) and plan at some point to probably do a 4 inch lift and larger tires. There will be some minor off-roading but not very steep hills. I am using the cart maingly for family fun so there will often times be myself, wife and 2 kids rolling around (does the weight make a big differene)? I am aiming to go around the 20 mph range. Everything in the cart appears pretty much original.

Also not knowing all of the maintenance done to the cart in the past what are the key areas to make sure are in good shape first, or first things first maintenance.

Thanks guys!

Go with the motor. The gears will interfere later when you decide to lift the cart. The motor won't create problems down the line like the high speed gear could.

Sounds like a PQ motor is in order. Thats gonna be the best bang for the buck. http://www.plumquick.com Give Robby a call, tell him what you got and what your plans are and they'll fix you right up for about $225 plus shipping.

Maintenance. BATTERIES and CABLES. Those are going to be the most important things to check and maintain. Search the forum for battery Maintenance and theres a few threads, maybe even a sticky or 2. Use only Distilled water and make sure all the cables are clean and tight and in good shape. Use grease or some kind of protectant on the battery connections.

20 MPH....might be kinda hard unless you start upgrading other things. You could get there but you may loose all your torque in the process unless you up the voltage to 48. 48 volts is one of the best upgrades you can do.

Thanks for the input I appreciate it! Based on my readings it seems there is a speed gain by using larger tires, however sounds like some have had a torque loss. Is there a significant loss of torque? My neighbor found a set of used chrome wheels with slightly used off road tires I will check them out in the next day or two. Any recommendations on tire size? Also any advantages/disadvantages to raising a cart 4-5 inches?

The only disadvantage to lifting is losing some of the cart's stability. Advantages include more ground clearance and aesthetics. You should be able to clear 22" tires with a 4-5" lift. I have 23's on a 6" spindle lift. You will gain a few mph's with larger tires, my cart runs about 15 mph with my setup.
