'00 EZ Go - Battery or solenoid
New to the forum. I have found lots of good information on this site. I have a 2000 model EZ Go with the F/R by my leg and a toggle switch under the seat. The batteries are '06 model Trojans (I think T-105s). Now to my issue.
A couple of months ago the cart would be going fine. Then, after several holes, starting from a dead stop I would push the "gas" peddle and it seemed to try to go, but nothing would happen. I would push peddle several times, but no response. I would then turn the key off for several seconds and then back on and push the peddle and it would go (however, sometimes it wouldn't and I had to do it again). I also noticed if I "feathered" the peddle it would go without any issues. But, if you tried to floor it - and it didn't die in the process - it seemed to make a groaning noise and wouldn't go very fast at all and any kind of hill would kill it. The next week, it would start all over again. Now, from the beginning it seems to have no power at all. This cart used to last 18-36 holes (fairly flat golf course) with no issues. Is this a battery problem or a solenoid problem? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. |

Re: '00 EZ Go - Battery or solenoid
First thing, if someone asks, you have a DCS cart.
Assuming your batteries are charged, I'm guessing you either have a bad battery connection or your controller is bad. Start by pulling on all the battery cables to make sure they are good then disconnect, clean and tighten all the connections. |

Re: '00 EZ Go - Battery or solenoid
I believe it is a PDS also. I'll check all the connections again just to make sure. I'll also check the battery voltages again. Last week they all seemed to be below the 6.3 volt mark with one under 6 (if my memory serves me right). From what I read on here anything below 6.3 is on its way out and anything below 6 is gone. I guess I'm answering my own question...looks to be pointing towards needing new batteries. If that is the case, now it's a question as to which battery to buy. I've read all the info on this site about selecting a battery, but it doesn't make the decision of money vs performance any easier.
Thanks again. |

Re: '00 EZ Go - Battery or solenoid
Ok, I checked the voltages again. After roughly 30 minutes from unhooking the charger 5 of the batteries showed ~5.88 with one showing ~3.85. I guess new batteries are in order. After reading about maintenance, looks like I was adding water (I did use distilled) at the wrong time. I was adding water after I had used the cart for 18+ holes. I added until it was almost to the bottom of the fill holes, which probably caused the batteries to boil over. I noticed staining on the top of the batteries. Also, with playing 36+ holes on occasion I probably discharged the batteries more than I should have, which didn't help their life span. Lesson learned. Let me know if anyone has any other suggestions that would be helpful. Still not sure exactly what batteries to buy...Sam's club specials vs Trojans. I know you get what you pay for, but it's hard to let go of $5-600+ dollars.

New batteries are in order. Your call on what to buy. Trojans are proven but expensive. Others perform well also. It really comes down to maintenance. Diligent maintenance = good performance and longer service life.

Re: '00 EZ Go - Battery or solenoid
OK...got new batteries (Sam's specials PowerFast by Interstate, "Heavy Duty", 208 AH - I know they're "cheapies", but I have to supply batteries for two carts), cleaned all connections with soda & water, sprayed all terminals & cable ends with red corrosion retardent, installed batteries, and put the cart directly on the charger without driving it (per new battery breakin procedure found on this site). Now to my questions.
According to the procedure it says that the batteries are initially @ 75%. Meaning when I do the 1st charge they will go up to 100%? I ask because I took it for a little spin (not very far at all) after the first charge to drain the batteries down to 75% (per procedure) then checked the voltage and all batteries were at ~5.71. This is below 10% per the chart, but the cart never showed any signs of dragging. This doesn't seem right at all. Also, is the chart good for brand new batteries, or after they have gone through the breakin period? 2nd, I work so obviously I can't stand over the cart and wait until the charger stops to go drain the batteries a bit. However, the charger I have (Powerwise II, EZ Go) turns off and on according to the voltage of the batteries. Will this do the same thing as me hovering over the cart and driving it everytime the charger turns off? Lastly, here are the #'s off my cart. In passenger compartment: Man #A100 Serial #1241611 On Motor: AU2500 Fleet Speed Class H Ser #91890 Two Part #'s (why, I don't know) 73124G01 & AY4-4001 I have 4 ga wires between all batteries and looks to be 4 ga between the controller and motor. However, it looks like 6 ga between battery pack and controller and from the motor to the F/R switch (if that is indeed where those go). Heck, the 6 ga might even be smaller than that if that is possible. Anyhow, does this confirm I have a early model 2000 PDS cart? The other cart I have is an early '90s model, but that is a whole different story. thanks again for any help and suggestions. Last edited by Flatrockgolfer; 09-16-2010 at 12:57 PM.. Re: '00 EZ Go - Battery or solenoid
The motor you describe is a DCS motor so I would guess that you have a run/tow switch on the controller cover and the F-N-R switch is down by your knees. Under the seat, the back of the F-N-R switch should look like a puck with 4ga or 6ga cables running to the motor and controller.
If all that is true you have a 2000 TXT, DCS cart. I'm a little unfamiliar with "Sam's specials PowerFast by Interstate, "Heavy Duty", 208 AH" are they deep cycle, golf cart batteries? I thought they should have a designation like GC-2 on them. Sam's out here in CA has Energizer GC batteries that are made by/for Johnson Controls at around $72.00 each. |

Re: '00 EZ Go - Battery or solenoid
Dougmcp,
I'm in the Austin, TX area. The batteries are GC-2s deep cycle golf cart batteries. They say made in Mexico on the side, which I believe is JCI. They were ~$66 with me turning in cores. I'll let you and pggroves work out whether it's a PDS or DCS. He seems to think it's an early PDS. It has a toggle switch on the controller box (run/tow I assume...it doesn't say it, but it runs in one position and doesn't in the other). The F/R switch is by the leg. |

Re: '00 EZ Go - Battery or solenoid
From what I know, DCS carts were made in 2000.
DCS controllers had a single 9 pin connector and the PDS controllers have 3 separate connectors. It's odd that your batteries ran that far down, are you sure the charger is working? Also check the battery in your meter, it may be giving you bad numbers. After charging just drive it around for 15 minutes then recharge. It takes 15-20 cycles for these to come up to about 95% and then another 50 cycles to come up to 100%. |
