Default Electric Motor Teardown

Well More Issues, and More Problems, during my recent trying to fix my problems, I bought a new set of wires for 83 Marathon, and was replacing them, and I have broken 2 of the 4 studs due to Rust, and Corrosion. Can anyone shed a little light on how to teardown the electric Motor to replace these parts. I have the axle and motor removed, as well as the cap on the front of the motor removed, and the brushes are exposed, I think replacing them will not be an issue, but one of the Studs that goes back into the housing of the motor is broke, and I do not want to tear into without a little direction so that I dont break anything else? A little help would be great?

Default Re: Electric Motor Teardown

Welcome to the fun house 83.

There should be two long bolts that run thru the center housing to the aluminum plate that attaches to the differential. Both of these bolts have to come out to repair the bamaged studs or to replace the motor. If one of these are already broken then it all needs to come off anyway. When you remove the center part of the motor the armiture may or may not stay on the differential. But the aluminum plate next to the rear end is bolted doen with four bolts so it will stay with the rear end. Now going back together is a whole nother nightmare! Good luck and keep us posted on your progress and what you had to go thru to get this accomplished. It is good information for others going thru the same thing in the future.

Default Re: Electric Motor Teardown

Here's what I did as I had to replace the rear end off one cart with a shredded differential, and a bad motor on another. I pulled the motor off the rear end (this is a newer model than your, so there could be alot of differences, but maybe it'll help) there are 3 bolts. Mark how the motor lines up, just to make it easier for you later. Don't remove the bolts that hold the field coils in place. no need to. remove the that hold the case on the end cap, and slide the case off (field coils will go with it) that will expose the brushes and studs. from there it's pretty straight forward, you have room to do everything without removing the armature. The brushes are attached to the studs, so move the spring tensioner and slide the brushes out and pull the studs out. They are probably soldered to the wire with silver solder, we were able to braze a new stud on, but do what you need to. Good Luck!!
