98 ezgo steering problem
hello, was out last night and i have been noticing my steering has been getting loose then i went to make a right turn and when i turned the wheel it slipped a couple times than caught again. So with my truck, my tractor and my cars I know i can just loosen a lock nut and use a screwdriver to tighten the gears together, is there an adjustment on these steering boxes or is it just another 400 bucks i don't have, is there a rebuild kit or do i just have to buy a new steering box???

Re: 98 ezgo steering problem
assuming this is for the 98 in your signature, the part # from E-Z-GO is 70724G01.
assume a cost of about $100 for the kit. (plus shipping) Here is what you need: http://www.nivelparts.com/pages/prod...02&m=EZ&n=EZGO |

Re: 98 ezgo steering problem
You dont need all those parts, you only need the rack and it is easy to change out.

Re: 98 ezgo steering problem
Fixer
oh please.... the rack is mated to the worm gear for a reason. Yes, I have on occasion changed out JUST a rack if the customer insisted, but when changing out something that is gear on gear (and costs practically nothing), why wouldn't you do the job completely? North Glad I was able to assist you. Contact Scotty or one of our sponsors for assistance with locating that part. |

Re: 98 ezgo steering problem
Ive done over 100 and never had to chang the other gear, because that is not where the problem lied in EZGOs steering. Im all about doing it right, but if nothing is wrong with the other parts why are you going to change it. Do you throw away a clean air filter? Do you replace your transmission just because it needs a new solenoid? You have to look at everything and just going in and replacing parts is not always the answer. Look at how many on this site go and replace the Carb, fuel pump, fule lines and still have the problem. A little guidance in the right direction could have prevented the expense.
Certain things I say change it, as an example, rear wheel bearings, if one goes bad I tell my customers to do the other one cuz they were both installed at the same time, and brake cables...always as a pair. |

Re: 98 ezgo steering problem
I did more than 100 in my first year of working at E-Z-GO......... I count the number of rack I have replaced alot higher than 100..... likely into the 1000's
so you assume a visual inspection of a worm gear is sufficient to determine if the gear needs replacing? Just curious, when replacing front wheel bearings, do you leave in the old races as well? If so, remind me to never send anyone to your shop for service work. The rack only runs about $40, the entire kit runs about $100. For the difference in price I get the peace of mind knowing that I replaced a worn worm gear, an old (and lets face it if the rack is worn, then the steering components are old) tie rod end and the most obvious worn part, the rack itself. I now know that for the next dozen or more years, I will most likely not have ANY issues coming from those parts. Thank you, I'll give my customers that peace of mind. The rack didn't wear itself out, the worm gear played it's part too. Putting a new rack in with a worn worm gear is a recipe almost guarenteed to have that cart back for another rack replacement in a short couple of years from unmated parts grinding together. Your logic about throwing away a clean air filter makes no sense since the air filter is a stand alone part, nor do I see the link between the transmission and a bad solenoid....... maybe your logic is so far above me that I am baffled by it, but here, let me give you some real world issues I deal with on a daily basis: When replacing a solenoid, I DO install new resistors and diodes When replacing a front wheel bearing, I DO replace the race it rides in When replacing the outter wheel bearing, I DO pull the inner bearing and regrease it and replace the seal (usually at MY expense) When greasing a front end, I DO replace worn/damaged grease cups on ball joints When replacing a brake cable, I DO replace the E-Clips When doing a valve adjustment on an E-Z-GO gas cart, I DO replace the valve cover gasket (usually at MY expense) When replacing a fuel pump, I DO replace the fuel lines and the fuel filter (again, usually at MY expense) No offense to you Fixer, but when I do work on someone's cart, I treat them fairly and with the same respect I expect to be treated with. If someone worked on my vehicles and did half the job, I would be pissed and would make sure everyone I knew was aware of the shoddy workmanship. I pride myself on doing quality work for a reasonable price and I have the word of mouth reputation and the repeat business that tells me that my customers are VERY happy with what I do for them. |

Re: 98 ezgo steering problem
I'm very glad to hear about the type of work that you do, we are on the same page. That is also what I give my customers.
I see criminal work everyday, with customers paying for parts and repairs they dont need. (i've even seen the front bearing changed but not the race). I get comments from my customers about how their carts have never been serviced as well as I have done it and how the last company was there for only 20 minutes and never pulled a wheel. We are on the same page. The referance to transmission and solenoids is an automotive deal, as most trannys use solenoids in them now. I see you list central Fl, are you in the Villages or close by? |
