Loose motor stud

I have an old ezgo with the motor perpendicular to axle. I had EMP rebuild motor to their two speed model last year. Yesterday while riding I smelled something hot. One of the studs(terminals) on motor was hot. After cooling I noticed the terminal is loose from under motor casing. Cable was still tight and secure. Motor still runs fine but I know it won't for long at those high temps. Is this an easy cure, or should I send back to EMP? I called EMP yesterday and got their voicemail, I left a message. Last night I sent an inquiry to their website. Still no response.

If the stud is long enough you can double nut the top and hold that to keep it from spinning while you retighten the base nut?

Yea I think stud is long enough. It has two nuts on it now, so I put another nut to lock the top two togerther and hold wrench on bottom nut at casing to tighten? Thus turning stud till tight. Does this damage the connection inside the motor?

Yes that will damage the motor.

You lock 2 nuts together at the top of the stud so you can hold the stud still while you tighten the bottom nut... it is important that the stud NEVER turns.

It should .... don't over-tighten stuff those are copper studs ~ easy to strip threads...

Scottyb should BMM be concerned because the stud got hot enough to lossen up even though the terminal was tight. Anything else to ck?

Mike is running some extreme voltage thru some pretty old equipment he knows he is gonna have some issues, so far he has kept things running pretty well.
He should continue to try to get in touch with PQ, their input on this would be a lot more valuable than mine.

I am only running 48v through it now. It is plenty fast enough through the woods at that voltage. My motor was rebuilt by EMP, not PQ. I got some feedback yesterday from EMP and responded to them a little while ago. I'll let you know what the final outcome will be. Thanks again for the help.

Don't forget to check all your connections periodically. The heat generated by use and cooling and heat and cooling will loosen the nuts. Use 2 wrenches on the motor studs and keep us posted.
