Default 96 TXT Powerwise Charger Suddenly Inoperable

After terrorizing trick-or-treaters in the neighborhood last night with the strobe lights flashing and scary music blaring my charger did not turn on when I plugged it into the cart at the end of the night.

I have a 96 TXT DCS and a Powerwise charger. Battery pack is reading 37.22 volts as of this morning. I checked the obvious, charger is plugged into the wall and no loose wires found on the cart. I pulled the cover off of the charger to see if there was a fuse inside but I did not see one.

I've read several of the posts about chargers (seems like there have been lots lately) but I am still at a loss. Is there a fuse that I didn't see? What else should I be looking for?

Please help....EZ GO is more fun that EZ NO GO!!!

I've pulled the fuse but am not familiar with this type of fuse. How can I tell if it is bad?

I've attached a picture so somebody who knows what they are looking at can shed some light on this.

Thanks!

Matt

Just like any other fuse. Check for continuity.

Continuity test dawned on me as soon as I saw my multimeter. Fuse was blown. Replaced fuse, plugged charger into wall & then to cart and then the charger turned on for about a 1/2 second before blowing the new fuse.

What do I check next?

Any time you have a blown fuse on a Powerwise charger, the first thing you need to check is the Diode bar. 9 out of 10 times, the diode bar is bad which is what caused the fuse to blow in the first place.

Diodes are new territory for me and I need some clafication. I have continuity both ways on both diodes. This = bad diodes?

yes your diodes are bad. diodes only let current go thru one way and not the other. You need a new fuse and diode bar.

According to the USPS tracking #, my diodes and fuse for the charger should be here today. Thanks Scottyb!

This morning I decided to charge the batteries 2 at a time with 12 volt battery chargers and I found that I have 1 battery at only 3.82 volts. The others range between 6.1 and 6.28. Batteries are Stowaway's from Sams and are from December 05 and January 06.

Could the bad battery have caused the charger to blow the fuse and diode's?

I'll be putting new Deka's in next week. Now I have just have to decide whether to get 6 of them or to just use this as an excuse to get 8 and convert to 48 volts.....I've got a hunch that you guys might be able to talk me into the conversion but if I do it I have a limited budget. On the bright side I can get the new Deka's dirt cheap.

The cart is a 2 seater DCS riding on stock tires used for cruising the neighborhood which is full of hills. I'd like to add a back seat and maybe a small lift in the future.

Anyone care to chip in their 2 cents?

Do the conversion. That is what I will be doing soon hopefully. Unless you are in need of longer runtime, why are you planning on the 8-6v setup?
