brake drum removal
Guys,
Trying to remove brake drums on a Melex 512G gas cart, I beleive it it a 1997 model or newer (red motor). I hear it is similiar to the EZGO drums. I have read the posts on here and it seems the slide hammer is the weapon of choice. I went by Advance Auto Parts today, told them I wanted to rent a tool to remove brake drums. They sent me on my way with a black case. When I got home and opened it, it was an axle puller - it would not fit onto the studs on the drum, but it did have the slide hammer. I have rented a puller from them before that did not have the slide hammer. Can I rent or buy one for the drums? Any pictures or suggestions? I hate to cut the drums off, because the only ones I can find to replace them state they will not work on the 4 cycle carts. Thanks |

Re: brake drum removal
I have tried a puller like that without the slide hammer, and it was damaging the axle where the lock nut screws on. My melex drums aren't exactly like those, the center of mine do not protrude out like yours, they are flush with the drum in the center, wirh a spanner nut and carter key. I will try to get a pic tonight.

Re: brake drum removal
I just did my 98 electric ezgo and also had one that was tight. I sprayed it down with kroil, similar to pb blaster, then gave it some really good whacks with a ball pen hammer. It took two large screw drivers and the hammer to get it to move. You could try to heat the hub with a torch around the splines also.
