88 marathon electric. Solenoid diode ?

I have an 88 marathon resistor cart that I'm rewiring. Looking at the wiring diagram from the sticky, it looks like there is a little diode going from one little stud on the solenoid to the other little stud. What does this diode do and where do I get one? I've searched and can't seem to find one. Do I need it? Cause it didn't have one on the solenoid before.

For the life of me, I don't recall having one on my old 88 either. It was a cheap White rogers solenoid. For the resistor cart I would say no need. for controller carts..yes
