Disc Brake Upgrade Questions

I am planning some upgrades to my cart this spring and brakes are part of the plans. The disc brake kit that Jake's offers seems very good. I was wondering if anyone could provide an idea of the level of mechanical ability it requires to install the kit? I have an 02 EZGO TXT Series cart. I was also wondering if once Jake's kit is installed if the factory rear drums still work? Anyone upgrade to front and rear discs? I have nothing but hills and I am thinking this set up may ultimately make the most sense for me. Scottyb, did not see a link on your page for your brakes. Did i miss it?

We tried front disc brakes on American cars all through the70s, 80s, and 90s. During this 30 years of testing we replaced front disc brakes and never the rears because the fronts did all the work. Todays cars & Trucks no longer use drum brakes.. Disc brakes are much more effective than drums. The resulting mix of the 2 is that the disc brakes do all the work... you end up stopping on the front only... this was a big problem in slippery conditions like wet surfaces... That being said I am not a fan of mixing disc and drum systems.

Almost true, Scotty, but some low-market vehicles still come that way. These vehicles do not have ABS either. I agree however that drums are being removed from the marketplace as we speak. And this is a good thing!

I have an older TXT workhorse with 4 wheel disc Brakes. It is a joy to 4x4 because you can stop and hang anywhere any time... and stop on a dime from top speed... the level of vehicle control and safety was increased dramatically... The 4 wheel disc hydraulic brake system did as much for the stopping as the 25 hp V-twin did for the going

Understand the issues with front discs and rear drums, makes sense. How about difficulty of installation? I would assume that Jake's kit adds the front brakes and does not eliminate the rear based on your responses?

I have a 2004 F250 for work and play... It pulled a 8000 pound trailer 2-3 times a week and now Golf Carts almost daily... My single cart trailer does not have brakes... at 125,000 miles I replaced the brake pads... that is efficient! AND it stops faster than any truck I have had with the 4 wheel discs.....


The Hydraulic brakes we are working with are available in 7 inch rotors for 10 inch wheels and 9 inch rotors for 12 inch wheels for increased stopping power. 4 wheel hydraulic brake systems increase the braking power 300% over standard golf cart brakes.

I hope somebody can post some info on the Jake's Brakes for you. It was my impression that this is what they did do based upon the requirements for the low speed electric vehicle market.

I installed a Jake's front disc brake kit on a cart for LSV requirements and it was not difficult. Jake's spindles are required with the disc brake kits. The Jake's master cylinder attaches to the stock EZ-GO rear brake piece below the brake pedal under the cart. There are no changes made to the stock rear brake system. Jake's just piggy backs off of the stock system. The kit comes precharged so you install the Jake's spindles, calipers, master cylinder and mount the reservoir (usually under the seat). I talked with Steve over at Jake's, who designed the system, who said his goal was not to change/modify the factory rear system at all (liability). You can adjust the front and rear brakes independently and the system does work well. The cart I installed the kit on was lifted running 27 mph.

Not wanting to high jack a thread BUT !!! does anyone know if there are ANY disc brake set-up for a G2 ??? going to big block it and want to be able to stop it too
