Default Lack of high end torque

I just finished the electrical upgrade on my 1995 medalist. I am now running 48 volts via ( 6 volt batteries. The batteries are brand new. I have the 480amp logisystems controller and HD F/R and 48 volt sol., 2 ga cables throught. The cart has lots of torque at low end. I have moderate hills around the house and it feels like it just looses tons of speed going up the hills. The cart is still on stock tires. I will be installing a lift and 26" tires. I am worried about the torque. I know I can upgrade motor or gears and I do plan to do so, however I just feel that it should handle stock tires better than this. I will get some voltage readings with a fully charged battery pack tomorrow as well as speed readings. I love the instantaneous readout of the voltage thanks to ScottyB.

Thanks,
David J.

What kind of shape is the motor in? Are the brushes worn out?

Check for output voltage of the solenoid and make sure you are getting full power to controller.

The motor is probably worn out. I have never looked at it on the inside. It is the original motor though. I will check the items that you mentioned. Thanks.

New batteries are only at 75% until properly broken in ..... Electric torque is highest at the bottom of the RPM scale. The faster you spin an electric motor the less torque it has....

Scotty, I am breaking in my batteries as per your web page directions. I just plugged it in for the third charge. I have to say that I am pretty impressed with the longevity of the run time. We played golf cart hide and go seek at my parents house today. There were 4 wheelers and mini bikes involved also. I rode it all day and when I would stop to hide my volt meter would build right back to 50.1 volts. I will continue with the break-in and see what happens. I have a feeling I will be getting in touch with PQ to either rewind my stock motor or just completely upgrade to a new motor. I know the big tires are gonna kill my torque.

If I get my motor rewound for torque will it turn less rpms? I am just trying to figure the rpm to torque thing out.

Torque and speed are a trade off. The more speed you get the less torque you will have. And vise-versa. I would have the motor rewound for torque. The increased voltage (48v in your case) will spin the 36v a little faster any way and the bigger tires will amount to a taller gearing change. So the speed should be about the same depending upon what size tire you bought. Hopefully you didn't get crazy big tires. I suggest 22-23 Max on an electric cart.
