New Battery Break-in
Happy New Year to everyone.
Scottyb or any other battery gurus. I have all new batteries. 8 (6volts) I am breaking them in as per the prcedure on Scottyb's website. I have the digital voltmeter that shows the instantaneuos voltage of the pack. I live where there are some moderate hills. I just charged my batteries for the 4th time. Yesterday I rode around with them for about 11 miles. The lowest readout I got on the meter was 46.2 for a split second on one of the last big hill climbs. On level ground I was showing upper 48 to lower 49 toward the end of my voyage. When I stopped it would go back up to 50.2 after about 1 minute. Am I supposed to be reading the voltage at the stop point or during running. The voltage drops signifacantly while climbing the hills. I just want to break them in correctly so that I may get the most life from them. Thanks, David J. |

Re: New Battery Break-in
All is normal. A voltmeter is just that, it gives you a voltage reading and there is no wrong time to read it.
A state of charge meter is a different animal that registers a remaining percentage of your beginning charge. |

Re: New Battery Break-in
The reading you are getting after stopping for minute 50.2 is the settled reading for the pack. According to the battery state of charge chart you are at about 85% at 50.2v. You can take the pack down a little further or recharge from there.

Re: New Battery Break-in
Thanks for the info. Do I have to run them down to 75% or so all in one day or is it allright to do it in two days. I have been running the heck out of the cart to get the charge down in one day. If it is allright to do it in two days it would make it a little easier and more comfortable for me at this time. It is getting cold outside again and my charge is dropping faster at this time. It is common for batteries to loose their charge faster in colder weather right?

Re: New Battery Break-in
Batteries have less reserve power in colder weather.
Recharge your batteries each time you have more than 15 minutes of pedal time. For maximum battery life expectancy never leave your batteries with less than 90% charge. To avoid sulfation, it's always best to recharge right after you are finished for the day, not recharging the next day. |

Ok thanks Doug. That is what I have been doing. Just want to make sure I am on the right path. Thanks again for the info.
