PowerWise Qe 48V Charger
I've converted to 48V on my 01 PDS. I've been using the 36V charger and a 12V charger. I can pick up a PowerWise Qe 48V cheap. Will this charger work for my setup. If so, the Qe charger has 3 connections, the old 36V has two, how would I wire the old handle to the new charger. Thanks.

Re: PowerWise Qe 48V Charger
Thanks for the advice. I will make sure it works first. I assume that all I will need to do is change the plug?

That somewhat makes sense, I'm trying to figure out what the three different connections would be mated to. Obviously +and - . what about the third?

Re: PowerWise Qe 48V Charger
I talked to the folks at DeltaQ, they said "Wiring the 48v charger directly to the battery pack on the cart will not be possible. The 48v receptacle on the EZGO car contains electronics which separate the third data line from the Powerwise QE charger into functions such as interlock, temperature and remote LED control. The 48v Powerwise QE was intend to function properly with the paddle and receptacle combination intact."
Oh well, back to 36+12 |

Re: PowerWise Qe 48V Charger
Unfortunately for all the 48v conversion guys, the Club Car 48v chargers are not stand alone units. They work with the club car onboard computer only. Yamaha does make a standalone 48v charger, Lester does too. There are some others too. I have been working with an onboard charger that maintains the pack at 100% after the charge. A 48v float charge, this is particularly nice for seldom use carts that sit for a while between uses.

Re: PowerWise Qe 48V Charger
The PowerWise QE 48V charger is much like the 36V charger, and if you ground the 3rd wire like it is in the 36V cart you will get the same battery charge algorithm as the 36V cart.
If you wish to have exactly the same algorithm as the 48V cart, either purchase a receptacle from E-Z-GO, or you can use a 14k resistor from the 3rd wire to ground to simulate it. That should set the battery temperature to 25C, so if you are at some other temperature you will likely not charge well - but at least you have something more than a hunk of scrap metal... Yes - be sure to check it works. If you can't test it, be sure to smell for the blown up bits. If you are interested, the most common problem that seems to plague golf cart chargers is water getting into them. This can happen at all points in the life cycle of a charger, including new from the factory. If someone complains of a large number of dead chargers in a shipment, then the shipment likely got wet. Look for rust hiding in the nooks and crannies - if you see any then you may have problems. Obviously what I write is completely without guarantee, but it is to the best of my knowledge correct. Glad to see you have found a great deal on what should be a great charger! |
