EZgo txt 2000 burning smell
Hello... Anyone have any ideas on what this could be? I have a 2000 EZgo TXT, burning smell really bad, and just died had to push home. replaced solenoid about 8 months ago, when I press the pedal it does click. It however does not move at all. All cables ok, but lot of heat coming from FNR box. Could this be it?

Yes. I am guessing you have a series cart. The F&R looks like the pic below. Is the cart modified at all? What are those mods? Likely one of the terminal studs have melted the housing. Check the cable connections for signs of heat damage.

Re: EZgo txt 2000 burning smell
Hello...I was hoping it was you that would reply ,.... you helped me before when my solenoid needed to be replaced with good information on targeting that for the cause. Well the cart looks just like that diagram for the FnR switch. My daughter was driving it and said it was smelling funny then it died. The buzzer would work and not work at times. The only thing I am aware of when it was bought was it was lifted with bigger tires. It was fine until the buzzer started to not beep all the time. I just tried it this morning and it clicks when pedal is pushed but no go. NOw buzzer is working.
If it is a terminal does the whole fnr have to be replaced or just that terminal? I will have m y husband take the cover off to see what it looks like and get back maybe you can direct me on your ideas? If I am looking at replacing this FnR how much do they typically range? |

Re: EZgo txt 2000 burning smell
Typically when they get to the point that the cart won't run the F&R is damaged to the point that replacement is the best option. Remove the cover (hat type). Check your cable connections on the rear side of the F&R. Any cherry or black discoloration is a sign of heat damage. Any leaning or tilted terminal is fatally damaged.
Increased amperage draw from bigger tires etc., or a loose connection can cause enough heat to melt the F&R housing. The F&R housing is a plastic composite. I use a modified switch cam in all modified carts. In this case I would use a new F&R with the HD ultra cool switch cam installed. Installing a larger battery cable system can also help deliver the amps with reduced heat. The system is like a chain when the motor draws amperage through the system the weakest link gets the hottest. See melted terminal in pic below : |

This is definetkly the cause of the problem so the only solution is to replace it. Is this just the FNR area ?

That is one of the worst ones I have seen. You will need to replaces cables as well as the F&R. The cause needs to be eliminated or it will happen again. I think a complete 13pc set of 4g cables and a custom HD F&R is needed.

Re: EZgo txt 2000 burning smell
Here is how this happens. Your motor draws amperage to perform any task you ask it to do like ; start slow, start fast, or push this cart up this hill. With each task it draws the amperage it needs to burn to provide the power asked for. When you put bigger tires on the cart you are changing to taller gearing. The bigger tire covers more ground per revolution. Each revolution requires more power to turn. This is just one way we ask our motors to draw more amperage. Adding weight like extra seating or cargo (passengers) requires more amperage too. This amperage comes from the battery pack and goes to the motor. There are 13 battery cables total. 5 on the battery tops and 8running between the batteries, controller, F&R, and the motor. All 13 cables need to be upgraded. If you change only some of the cable a bottleneck is created when the amperage gets to the smaller conductor, this restriction results in heat like you saw on your F&R. Ideally the controller & solenoid would be upgraded too.
Then you would have improved performance without the danger of a melt down. You can upgrade in steps. The cables and F&R first, then the Controller & Solenoid later. |

OUCH! BTW, your cart is a 2001, not a 2000. |
