Smile charging problems 1992 e z go

Hello
This is the first time I have done this.....FYI, I am a female who is pretty handy, I have a son who is suffering from a rare terminal disease and we were given a 1992 electric E Z Go to ride him around our property and in the neighborhood. I have already replaced the coils, contacts, the board(?) and replaced all the batteries. I think I made a big mistake when I changed the ends of the charger and the terminal it plugs into....If I am correct, the black wire coming out of the charger is the hot wire (+) and the white is the negative(-)...that is how I hooked it up. The problem I am having is that I am not sure I put hooked up the other part correctly. Is the black wire the positive(hot) wire and the red the negative? I always thought at least on a car...red was positive and black negative....anyways when I plugged my charger in and it blew my Solenoid and my charger smoked....not good I know!!!! I think I should have hooked up the black to the positive and the red to the negative.....not sure. Anyways , I replaced the fuse in the charger and tried it again with the black wire to the positive and the red to the negative ...and I get nothing, could I have fried my charger...or did I just blow the fuse??? Also...if my solenoid is fried (I am sure it is)would that cause my charger to act up? I really want to get this working for my son..but it is all new to me and it is testing my patience!! Ha!! ! I think I need a really simple diagram to make sure the batteries are in the right sequence and they are wired correctly to the solenoid and the f/r switch. I had an electrician look at it and he thought it was wired correctly(?) not sure. Thanks a bunch!!!

Welcome to the forum. Kudos for trying but on my Lester chargers the diagram says red or white is positive and black is negative....So now you need to figure out what got smoked...More help will be along momentarily...

Not to knock the helpful electrician but, there is little similarity between AC and DC electric...

You will probably need your electricians voltmeter to proceed, though! lol
You will need to put the cart up on jack stands (atleast one wheel off the ground) Did this cart run before? What is the voltage reading on the battery pack? Check where the charger leads connect...There is a simple test for the solenoid...
