After reading some of the many threads about converting from resistor carts to a controller cart, I have a few questions about converting.
I have an 86 EZGO and from the looks of it relatively stock.
Right now I just want to convert to either a programmable controller, but keep the stock motor for now. I am also thinking of updating to 48 in the future, since Peachtree City has plenty of paths to run on.
My wife wants the cart to run faster and be able to handle some of the hills. So far I have found that by using a 300 or 350 Alltrax controller with a 36 solenoid will give me more speed and some torque.
I'm guessing that I will also need to change out my F/R switch as well?
Once the resistor coils are gone, I then can add my 2 extra batt's for the 48v.(later on)
I just replaced the resistor coil wires (one burned out and arc'ed )
Batt's are relatively new Trojans...so got that so far in a long winded nutshell.
Any suggestions will be helpful, just want to slowly upgrade it till I either get a newer one or just keep it and add another.

IN a long winded nutshell You need to know what you want the cart to do when it is completely finished before you can pic the right components to start with

That's kind of what I figured. I am trying to move in the right direction. I want the cart to go faster, so I will search more of the forums before dropping any money towards controllers, and etc...

One way to get a Series cart to go faster is to put more voltage to it. Another way is to put a higher RPM motor on it. Either way you will need a bigger controller and HD solenoid.

That is the direction I'm going. I have been looking for motors, but will go the controller and solenoid first then save for the motor.

If you go up in voltage (48v) you will see improved speed and torque from the original motor. Most people never go up from there but those that do need to plan ahead with the proper cable & controller size for the motor they plan to purchase.

Thanks, I just might get the controller, cables, and solenoid while saving for the motor and install all of it in one shot!

I've been searching for some pics on battery placement when going from 36 to 48. I don't want to lose the bagwell, but will need to reposition the switch, speed controller and solenoid. I also don't want to use 8v batts either if I have to.
Anyone reposition the batteries in a way to get all 8 6v in there? If so I need pics. Just wondering how to reposition all the other stuff to still get the seat down!
Will keep searching the forums for any idea's.....

Just an FYI, you're not going to have a lot of choice when it comes to the motor. That ?GE? motor should have an armature gear on the end of the shaft that mates to the differential input. UNLIKE the newer motors with splined shafts.

You can send it out and have a motor shop (PQ, et.al.) go through it. But don't be looking for an upgraded aftermarket bolt on motor for that cart.

Only other option would be to swap out the rear axle to a newer one (?1990+?) that will receive the spline shafted motors. That will require moving the spring perches and shock mounts.

This is all based on the assumption that your cart motor is parallel to the axle. I've seen 86 resistor carts that had them both ways.

I was begining to wonder about the motor and the axle. I was thinking of replacing the axle sooner or later. That was something I was not wanting to do right away. Just want to get the most out of the cart for now, till I can manage to get a newer cart. This one is looking like a project to play with for now.
My main concern would be to upgrade to a controller, solenoid and 2 extra batt's. The rest will come later on. And yes the motor is parallel to the axle. I'm kind of thinking that the axle may be bent slightly on one side anyways, but still drives relatively straight.
