Good & Bad News & Solar Cart Pictures
The good news is I finally got smarter than my camera. The bad news is my 6 months in Baja is over in a few days. Note the dingle balls on the roof. To help people not to hit their head on corner of panels and of course for high style.

Re: Good & Bad News & Solar Cart Pictures
dope! any chance you can snap a few photos of the underside of the panels? are those off the shelf panels? any idea how many WH you're making?
i've been doing research into adding a panel to my cart. 104 5"x5" 0.5V cells (8x13) so thats like 52V @ 5 amps peak. i can probably squeeze another row or two to get the voltage up a bit more. the rectangular cells would allow for more energy density in the given space. anywho, cool lookin' cart! -sj |

No Scotty we dont have grid electric where we are. Just cruising on solar power for our lights too.Yes I could take the panels off. But what would hold the dingle balls up?

Re: Good & Bad News & Solar Cart Pictures
SONICJ : Yes those panels are off the shelf. 120 Watt Kyocera panels. App.7.4 amps. 3 in line make 36 volts and that is what my cart is. One more panel for 48 volts, but you might want to go with a smaller panel size in this case because the size of the array is getting kind of large. If the size dosent bother you,go for it. The output varies greatly between summer and winter, because the panels are laying flat. In the summer you would be getting 360 watts an hour for x amount of hours in the sun. Of course there are the golden hours of 10 to 3 when full sun is best, but anytime before or after that you are still making power if the sun is shining on the panels. Winter is different. At low angles of sun Nov to Feb you will cut power production by a third. You could hinge the panels so that when stopped you could raise them for low winter sun angle, but I decided ridged works best for me, as the weight of the solar panels together is sixty lbs.

SONICJ: How much does that panel cost. Does that include a voltage regulator?

Scottyb: No I dont leave the cart in Baja, cant seem to live without it. But hauling that amount of lead back and fourth dosent seem that environmentally friendly. Thats life.

good info there leapingbuddha!

that drawing was just me playing with different layout configurations. weight is my first concern. for safety, i'd like to keep the cg as low as possible. the other biggie is width. i'd like to keep the width as close to stock as possible to keep people from banging their heads and to avoid having to hang dingleberries from the roof. 43 3/4" is a little more width than i want, but required to accommodate these particular cells... heres the cells im considering: link basically, they are cosmetic blems that never made their way into production panels. for a regulator i was considering the 48V prostar by morningstar. for the panel frame, i was considering using 3/4 foamular, with maybe some carbon fiber stiffeners embedded, then glassed with fiber glass. should be rigid, lightweight and cheap. the foamular also shapes easily with power or hand tools so making purdy rounded edges is easy. plus, foam and fiberglass hurts less than whacking your head on aluminum. for the glass, i was thinking lexan. if i loose a couple % of efficiency thats fine, the weight savings should be significant. just to be clear, i have no intentions of saving the planet or pipe dreams of self sustainability, i just find it interesting and want to get my hands dirty w/a small pv system. mrgreen: -sj |
