Default Running Accessaries off Key.

To start with I am basically rebuilding an early model 2001 EZGO PDS cart. I have upgrade from 36v to 48v with quite a few other upgrades coming from Carts Unlimited.

Ok now time for the question:

I have a secondary 12v system to run lights and stereo. I want to wire it through the key switch. After doing some research it looks like the voltage running through the key is 36v/48v (depending on cart). Can I wire in a relay to fire up that 12v system with the 48v basically being my trigger current through the key? Or do I have to add some kind of step down device to get the voltage down to 12v and trigger a simple relay?

If I am wrong about the voltage running through the key switch please let me know. I would check it myself but my cart is currently down to basically the frame and I want to get all these electrical issues figured out.

2001 had a 4 post switch. The switch had 2 feeds to it, one was pack voltage and the other was 12v for the lights.

Scottyb, mine has a two post switch.

Will a normal relay be able to handle the 48 voltage for the triggering switch? Or is it too much current? Could I buy a 48v relay and just run my line and load at 12v?

Or am I just totally on the wrong path?

Never have done this but it should work.

Take another 48 or 36 volt solenoid and hook it to the key switch.
Then run the 12 volt stuff through the solenoid.
Don't worry about the contactor in the picture. Just hook it up the same way.
The solenoid doesn't care what runs through it as long as the coil has the right voltage.
I just used this picture because it's nice and clear what to hook up.

Seems like a 4 pole switch would be cheap and easy........

Andy, I am liking that idea. Just so I am clear though, the solenoid coil is voltage specific. For example I can not use an old 36v solenoid with a 48v pack to trigger solenoid 12v system?

You can also do what I did....The problem with the way you're thinking is that when you switch from Fwd to Rev, when passing through the Nuetral Switch position you will lose all power to your accessories momentarily. That's because the power (36v or 48v) is removed from the input of the Key Switch when the Fwd/Rev switch is in Nuetral....

My way gives you uninterrupted power (12v) when transitioning.

The first pix is just an simplified example of another way to do what you want to do, simply powering off the Key switch but using 3, or 4 low cost relays in series to allow for full voltage operation.

The second pix was my first configuration (in red) which was using the IGN Sw to turn on the relays directly. After wiring this up I thought all was well until I noticed the drop-out problem.

The third pix is how I overcame the power drop-out problem. It involves a little more work but it's worth it IMO...

Note that in all the configurations the cart's ability to "GO" isn't dependent on the AUX battery in any way so you can still use the cart with/without the aux 12 v battery installed.

Very interesting Todo. You don't have a clearer version of the last picture you could either pm me or post do you? It is kind of blurry and I am already electrically illiterate so a clearer pic may help me.

Todo, I did try that. I also downloaded image and tried opening in another viewing program. Just got a little to blurry to really make out some of the things.

Anyway, PM sent with my email.
