brand new sport 2+2 overheats and stalls
My 84 year old mom needed a way to get around her property after she let her car go. She lives 120 mi. from me, and out in the country, and I'm not mechanical anyway, so I got her a new EZ-Go Sport 2+2 electric, thinking it would be trouble free for a year or two as long as it gets charged, batteries filled and cleaned. Wrong! My little brother says it runs for a few minutes, then starts to smell like hot wiring and stalls. Then runs after a short cooldown, then stalls, like 5 times or more around the property. The roads and grades are country, but fairly mild (e.g. could easily bike with a single speed.) The dealer came out and drilled holes in a housing of some component (remember, I'm not there, and don't know carts, and my mom can't describe it any better than that). The dealer tells my mom he will come back to install a fan, but hasn't shown in 3 weeks. The cart still stalls. And it's not really hot here in Texas yet. What do you guys think? Is this a new design flaw? Or a one-off glitch? You can probably guess what this component is, is there a custom upgrade available to fix this? Thanks for your help.

The controller may be overheating from slow speeds or the battery cables are corroded or loose.

Re: brand new sport 2+2 overheats and stalls
Doug, thanks for your reply, but the cart is brand new, and my mom, even at 84, is still a leadfoot. I guess loose cable connection is still a possibility, even though it was just delivered new a few weeks ago, but I would have thought the dealer would have checked that when he came out, instead, he drilled vent holes in the controller housing for ventilation. So, is there any kind of controller upgrade, or would a fan directing additional air across the controller help?

I think if were me , I'd be very upset with the dealer,if it is new they should pic it up and swap it for another one ,drilling holes and adding parts on a new cart is crazy, they should stand by there product better than that!

If it is brand new why not let the dealer try to sort the problem out without a lot of second guessing from afar.
Did you check the cables to see they were tight? |

No, haven't checked cables, I'm 120 miles away. For "dealing" with the dealer, I was seeking to approach the problem from a more informed position, that is, what is the likely cause of this problem and what are reasonable solutions. Since I know next to nothing, he can say "yeah we always have this problem, let me piss on the batteries and everything will work great, but you have to wait til after the weekend when I've drunk enough Pabst." Its a rural area, so it's not like I have much choice of dealers.

Re: brand new sport 2+2 overheats and stalls
I am a dealer and have never drilled holes in the cover of a "new" cart. Thats what they have warranty for.
It sounds to me the controller is overheating and cutting off. I have seen a few do this. A new controller will fix the issue. Tell the dealer to swap controllers and warranty the one in the cart. If they dont want to fix it, call EZGO and they will/might send a rep to your house for repairs. Make sure you have the dealers info that sold you the cart as well as the serial number. Let EZGO know what their dealer is doing to these "NEW" carts. That is not an acceptible repair. |

Thanks, "Courtesy Cart", your answer has just the information I was seeking. My dealer may step up and do the right thing, or not, but now I know which way to proceed.
Thanks much to all. |

Make sure they replace the cover as well. It's called an environmental cover for a reason......
