1997 ezgo txt electric cart quit running need help

my kids were running the cart and it just quit.
the battery cables were pretty bad so i
got some new ones and started replacing them
and every time i took an old cable off it sparked.
and when i put a new one on it sparked.
if i put it in tow mode i get no sparks.
any help would be great!
trouble shooting guide etc.

You likely have a DCS electrical system on your 97.

You should always put Run/Tow in Tow mode before performing maintenance.

Hope you didn't do any other damage....controller, etc.

Yepper........ and any time when working on the electrical system, disconnect the Positive+ and Negative- Main cables too to save the controler.

turns out the controller popped.
the kids broke it pushed it in the garage
and let me deal with. but all fixed now.

What did you do? New controller or what?

replaced the controller with a used one that someone gave me.
and no kids drive the cart without me on it
also when i took the controller out and shook
it, it sounded like a box of rice krispys
