Are you talking about this charger for a E-Z-GO?


If so and you find something please LMK. I've been told they are throw aways and there non fixable.
I did put a TXT plug in on mine though so it will work on the 2000 E-Z-GO at the beach.

Yeah, that's the one....The EZ site, and the label on the charger, references the OEM manual which I do not have.....Just wanted more info on the "smart" charger....

I hate devices that use LED's in an attempt to 'dumb-down' what the user sees. I would prefer a Voltmeter and a minimum of an Ammeter instead of the LED's.

Of course I already have the volmeter in the cart but I have no idea what the charge current is, for what duration and how it rolls off over time until the charger finally shuts off.... I'm sure the charger algorithim uses dv/dt but it's all cloaked by the LED's and the lack of an Ammeter.
I have no idea if this charger will provide a 'float' charge. It doesn't say one way or the other....

Just interested in stuff like that.......

P.S. Andy, anything is "fixable" if you have the right info (schematic) as long as the innards are not potted and sealed. I'm sure they have a microcontroller that uses a proprietary algorithim but that's just one part of many.....everything else likely can be replaced.

Any chance I could get a copy of the PowerWise QE charger documentation mentioned here in this post? I recently bought an 08 EZ-Go, thinking I will want to add a digital voltmeter to the dash in addition to learning more about the charger.

The best I've been able to come up with is akin to a sales brochure.
Here it is, but don't believe all of what it says in paragraph # 5 on page 3.
I've been told it doesn't turn back on when the voltage gets down to low or restart after 30 Days.

Sorry about the diminutive size, but that all I could get.

Add a generic 0-30A ammeter in-line in one wires from the cart's charging receptacle.
Better yet, add a 0-500A ammeter shunt in one of the battery pack's interconnecting cables and you can monitor how may amps the drive system is drawing or how many amps the charger is putting out.


I have my doubts about it using a dv/dt algorithm, but I might be wrong.
My guess it is something less complex, like a simple voltage comparator.

Tech note:
A lead-acid wet cell is not fully charged until the specific gravity of the electrolyte cease to increase while a charging current is passing through it.
On-charge voltage tracks specific gravity and can used to indirectly monitor the specific gravity, so when it stops rising while a charging current is passing through the cell, it can be assumed that specific gravity has also ceased rising.

By monitoring the instantaneous change in voltage over time (dv/dt), a microprocessor can be programed to shut of a charger when the cell is "Fully" charged, however there are 18 x 2V cells in a 36V battery pack and the charger is looking at the sum of their voltages, so a single weak cell could put the rest of the cells in an "overcharging" situation.

Because of this, and it is less expensive to do, most automatic golf cart battery chargers simply shut off at on-charge voltage slightly less than the average "Fully" charged voltage for a statistically significant population of tested cells.
