Default Installing stereo in ball holder? Clearance? 2008 PDS

I've searched high and low and can't get a straight answer. Is there enough clearance to install a standard (sony) car cd head unit without the back of the radio hitting the inside of the cowl? I've seen it done, then I've heard that some have had issues. It's a 2008 PDS.

Thanks

Nice tundra... Yes depending on the head unit. Check the dimensions to be sure. If it's close but not quite, you can fab a install kit out of a piece of plexi/ABS/wood...

You have to make sure the radio itself does not touch anything metal. I have burned up two radios because something metal touch the radio. My solution was to wrap up the radio in electrical tape and I haven't had a problem since.

Use a marine grade radio. More expensive but look at where the unit is... Also use plumber tape on the mount to keep it from bouncing. OR... go with something like this:

I have a generic DIN chassis head unit in the ball holder on my Medalist with a marine style flip up cover. No issues to date. I used a hacksaw blade (just the blade held between my fingers, the plastic is soft and cuts easily) to carefully trim the "tab" on top of the hole so the radio can barely be squeezed in. That tension is all that holds mine in, and for over a year, it has been more than enough.

Thanks for the info guys. I already have the speakers on order, and I have a practically new sony head unit sitting around. I went with marine speakers (6.5 Cadence Seaqua with built in crossovers), but the head unit will do for now, I'll replace it with a marine unit once it craps out. I'm not a fan of those little ipod systems, I enjoy good ole' radio most of the time (also need radio for the LSU games!!!)

Kab, I'm going to attempt your method and let you know how it goes.

My thoughts on marine grade stereo products: I buy the cheap or middle of the road stuff for my boat, in a salt water environment, components only last about a two years, no matter if you bought the $400 speakers, or the $60 MTX ones...they are all ready for the trash bin after a few seasons....and with the engine running, wind noise, etc it's hard to pick out the difference in sound quality.

I also plan on mounting a radio in the ball holder of my ezgo and was wondering how much to trim to get it to fit.

It's real easy guys. Slide the head unit in from the front, make note of where it hangs up, like Kab said, use a hacksaw blade and start trimming away where the head unit hangs up until it's all the way in.

Using just the hacksaw blade will give you more controll over what you cut and allow you to just take a little at a time.

Just take your time and leave it as tight as you can to be able to slide the head unit in.

Good luck

If you're the nervous type, cut less than you need and use a wood rasp for the "fine tuning". It ain't brain surgery, I'm sure you'll be fine. If it doesn't work out, it wasn't my advice...

Thats the same unit I use. Not the greatest quality sound, but, withstands the weather and abuse. Mine is in the left dash pocket with speakers on both sides of the dash. No amps needed.
