Default Ezgo will not go in reverse

I have a 2003 ezgo 36 volt REGEN with a DCX 400 7037 04 Controller. When I switch into forward the cart goes forward and runs good. When I flip into reverse the cart still goes forward and runs good. I hear the F/R switch engaging and dis-engaging also the motor engaging. The cart was being used, we stopped and then it wouldn't go into reverse, so the problem occured under normal use. The dealer I bought it from told me that the controller has gone bad and that I needed a $780 replacement controller. I am looking for a 2nd opinon from the community. Thanks for any direction before I spend half of the value of the cart.

I would buy a new controller from carts unlimited for half of that price

Dealer is right, time for an upgrade. You are describing a very typical DCS failure.... Usually brought on by low voltage operation. Get a voltmeter or analog SOC meter for the cart.
The stock unit is 275 amps ~ Do not buy a rebuilt unit
New Alltrax 300 amp is $350
The upgrade 400 amp is $420
You will gain top speeds up to 20mph with either one, you will just get there faster with the 400. Use the 400 if you want bigger tires or rear seat, etc.
Hope this helps

F-N-R Switches are a lot cheaper than Controllers. It would advisable to check it out. Contacts could be welded shut.

Yes, do check the function of the F&R toggle switch. In a DCX cart the Directional selection is done in the controller and loosing either F or R is a typical sign of failure. My advice is based upon many DCX controller failure experiences...

Thanks for the suggestions I think I will get a replacement F&R switch just because of the age not an expensive upgrade. My cart is lifted with oversize tires and runs about 20 mph now on a straight, I was under the impression that the controller was a 400AMP, but that is what assuming does.
Is the volt and SOC Analog the same as what I call an electronic meter to test household volts and batteries or is it special for golf carts and ezgo Sorry I know this is basic
Thanks for the direction and advice

A digital voltmeter (DVM) with 200 volt DC capabilities is available at any big box store, walmart, HD, lowes etc.

Test your directional selector micros once you get the meter.

I assume you are refering to the rocker switch in the dash? If so, that would be a rare occurance for one of those to go bad......

Is the controller in that cart Blue and White? going by the #'s you posted I believe that is already an aftermarket controller on the cart and it does sound like it is a 400 amp unit.

Thanks for the response. The controller is blue an white, the full #'s are the following.
DCX 400 7037.04
Spicer 73069g01
1195425 28
D D 3157010635

That is the only #'s that I could find under the cover. The cart is lifted with I think 18" tires and bumper guards and a dump tray on the rear.

Does this provide any additional insite. From what I am reading it apprears that the FR switch could be a problem but not likely.
if the controller is the problem and it is an aftermarket should I have it rebuilt?
thanks
Dave
