Default Don't have a 48v charger. Is a 36v and a 12v charger a practical temporary solution?

Will hopefully be putting the finishing touches on a 48v upgrade for a buddy's cart tomorrow. He insinuated he needs to wait before pulling the trigger on a 48v charger. How good, or bad, of an idea is it to use the stock 36v charger to charge 6 of the 6v batteries and a separate 12v charger to charge the other 2 6v batteries? On paper it seems like it should be fine but I really can't wrap my head around it being such a great idea. Thoughts?

It works. I think it is not as good for the whole pack as a 48v charger..... but it works.

I did that for over a year, and it worked great! It's a little more inconvenient than just plugging in, but it's inconvenient not to have your cart too! For the 12V charger I recommend it be at least 10A, 15A would be better. Make sure you do not plug in the charger until your battery leads are connected ( no sparks )!

P.S. Make sure you unplug it before unhooking your battery leads too!

Nice score. What kind of charger is it?

How did you have your batteries and/or chargers hooked up?

I charged with a 36v and a 12v for about 9 months - just got my 48v charger. It;s a pain in the butt sometimes but can work. I;m not sure how it effects the pack balance so as I had time, I would take the 12v charger and charge batteries 1 and 2, then 3 and 4 then 5 and 6, then 7 and 8 in an effort to keep the pack equalized.

I've only done two charges on the 48v charger, so can;t comment on any differences yet.

How did you charge the batteries in the middle of the pack? Or did you swap the batteries around?

See attached pic.

If you take a 12v charger and attach to Battery 1 + and Battery 2 -, then you charge just those two batteries.

Then move to Battery 3 + and Battery 4 -, and you charge just those two batteries.

etc. etc.

When I had mine wired for 36/12v charging, the 36v leg was batteries 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 and batteries 7 and 8 were the 12v leg.

You could do the same thing with a 6v charger and only charge 1 battery at a time.

I had my 36V charger wires connected with the negative charger plug lead to the negative junction on the battery pack and the positive charger lead to the positive post of the sixth battery in the pack ( series connected as would have been factory for 36V ) The two remaining batteries get the 12V charger. Connect the leads negative to negative on one battery and positive to positive on the next battery. There is no need to unhook any cables to do this. Remember to connect the 12V charger battery leads before plugging it in and unplug it before removing the battery leads. Like I said before, I've done this for better than a year and it has worked beautifully! I have found that it takes a few more hours to charge the two extra batteries unless you have a 15A charger.
