Did you take the cover off of the little black box and see if you could identify where it is coming from. Do not continue to drive your cart if your smell something burning. I see people do this all the time.

I would agree - do not drive the cart until you find the burning plastic problem. there are two plastic boxes, one is bolted to the right rear fender and the other box covers the forward/reverse switch which is located towards the front, on the right side of the compartment. If the smell is coming from the front cover, then the problem might be around the forward/reverse switch connections. i had a 1996 EZGo cart that went one step beyond( fire!). Problem was loose connection between motor and "C" post on F/R switch. wire overheated to the point where it burned away. then it managed to catch the reverse buzzer on fire which then caused the cover to start burning. i think that is when someone noticed the problem HA HA HA! i replaced the F/R switch with a new replacement and the burned up cable between motor and switch. I used 4GA wire and plan to swap all the rest out during the summer.

also discovered the jumper between the solenoid and speed control burned up too.

i saved the old switch and plan to rebuild it. i think replacement parts are available.

took the cart for a test drive and the cart owner noticed the cart speed was faster. also mentioned that the reverse buzzer wasn't working for awhile <G> that information told me that the problem was there for a long time.

this was my first shot at repairing a cart so if anyone else has any suggestions, please let me know!

thanks!
