Well, since I'm just talking to myself.
Maybe I can ask a legitimate question.

Braking on this cart is not very good.
Going down a hill you really have to push.

I've got the drums pulled and the pads and drum are very slick ( shinny slick)
I have about 1/8" on each pad.

should I replace the pads or just scuff them up.

I don't know much about cart brakes, other than the are mechanical and marginal at best.
If I had the drum pulled, I'd probably replace the shoes along with cleaning & Lubing everything.

OR

Replace the mechanical drum brakes with mechanical disk brakes.

I'm not much help in this area, but at least your no longer talking to yourself.

LOL it's good to see another woodworker trying to be a mechanic! I agree if I had it all opened up I would go ahead and replace the pads as well as clean everything with a good brake cleaner.

So, 18 year old cart with possibly the original brakes. I vote for pad replacement. Not expensive or difficult even for non mechanics like me. Search this forum. lots of brake info here. There is at least one thread with step by step instructions with pictures. It's on a club car but they are very similar in this area. If you decide to go ahead here are some tips I've learned from this forum: 1 take pics before you disassemble. 2 do one side at a time. 3 if you are old enough to get mail from AARP take some steps to raise the cart as high as you can. 4 consider taking the cables off, hang them up and spray wd 40 or similar down the sleeves and make sure cables slide freely. Replace them if not. 5 when re-assembling, make sure castle nut is tight. don't back it off to get the cotter pin back in.
The brakes can be dialed in pretty good but takes some practice and is a PIA.

If you are going to replace drums and pads you are looking at a good down payment on the mechanical disc set up. They get good reviews here and are very easy to install. However, they require 10'' or bigger wheels (standard is 8")
