1986 EZ-GO Marathon Electric Cart stalls with accelerator pedal pushed beyond 1/5 way
yipes! I just replaced all the batteries and cables to my cart. Issue is that when I am in FORWARD mode and depress the accelerator pedal beyond about 1/5 way down it dies/stalls. If I ease up and depress it very lightly it goes again. In Reverse it works just perfect and I can depress the accelerator all the way to the ground.
thanks ! HM |

Re: 1986 EZ-GO Marathon Electric Cart stalls with accelerator pedal pushed beyond 1/5
Hi and welcome! Did your cart do this before the battery and cable change? Take a look at the stickys on wiring ( top of page ) and double check your hookup. I'd start there. If that's not it You'll get some more help from folks more knowledgeable than me!

yes, it didit before :( - I found a wiring diag for a 1989-1994 & went off of that. Not sure if it is diff from mine. not sure what year my cart is. I think it is a 1986 :) S/N is 631008. manu code is E1291. Grateful for any assistance!

Re: 1986 EZ-GO Marathon Electric Cart stalls with accelerator pedal pushed beyond 1/5
Hello haley< your cart is a 91 based on the last two numbers of the manu code.....a common problem with this type of cart is the potentiometer. This tells the cart what speed to go as the accel pedal is depressed. to test this you take the black and white wires off of the controller small pins and set your ohm meter to ohms. with the keyswitch off you place a lead on the black wire and one on the white wire. as the pedal is depressed it should start at 0 ohms and work its way up to about 5 ohms when pedal is all the way down. If reading is to high the cart will do as you described your is doing.

Re: 1991 EZ-GO Marathon Electric Cart stalls with accelerator pedal pushed beyond 1/5
thanks, that is very helpful! I have tried to find out where the potentiometer resides and I can't find it on any wiring diagram. Can you direct me to a manual or diag somewhere?
thanks, HM |

Pot box looks like this or something like it:

Re: 1986 EZ-GO Marathon Electric Cart stalls with accelerator pedal pushed beyond 1/5
Here's a cut&paste of what your serial number returns on the EZGO site:
Search Results Model Year: 1991 Make/Model: Electric 4-wheel Marathon You said it fails going forward, but works fine in reverse. If so, the Pot Box is good. The only thing that changes in F or R is the direction of current in on the the motor winding. That is accomplished by the F/R switch. Sounds like the F/R switch contacts are on their last legs and when you hit it with higher current from your new batteries, they overheat and go on strike. I'm not all that familiar with marathons, but if it works in one direction but not the other, you're probably be better off looking at components that are unique to the direction it fails in. |

Re: 1986 EZ-GO Marathon Electric Cart stalls with accelerator pedal pushed beyond 1/5
should I replace the F/R switch?v Also, is the Pot Box located near the F/R switch? Sorry for the dumb questions...
I am going up to my property where the cart is after work today. Anything I should double check? HM |

I think the pot box is under the floor between the pedals and the seat, but the accelerator moves the arm on the potentiometer, so follow the linkage. |
