Default Battery charger always runs 12 hours

I recently purchased a 1993 Marathon (my 1st cart).

Owner said he replaced batteries and cables 1 year ago.
Batteries and cables look like a recent install.

Problem is that each time I charge the batteries, the charger runs for 12 hour.
If I reset the charger, it runs for another 12 hours.

It starts charging around 18 amps and goes down to around 6 amps. Don't know how many amps it's at just before shutting off.

Cart runs very good after a charge, and batteries seem to last.

I'm assuming I have a problem either with the charger or the batteries.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Which charger do you have?
Sounds like you've got a manual one with a timer.

What is the Battery Pack Voltage after it is charged?
Attached is a chart that correlates battery voltage to state of charge.

I have a '92 Marathon, new batteries and the same charger. Mine charges about 3 hours total and shuts off. Check to see if you have one battery testing lower than the rest after charging.

Yeah, that is an automatic type charger. You set the timer to Start and it counts up until the unit turns off, telling you how long it took to charge the battery.
So, the battery pack isn't reaching the 44-46V cutoff (one or more bad cells), or the control board isn't doing what it is supposed to do. (Could be that the previous owner bypassed the relay)

Note: The 44-46V the battery has to reach to turn off the charger depletes rapidly, so after they've rested about 12 hours, or used a bit, you'll see about 38.2V if the battery is fully charged.

After charging, I'm getting between 6.6v to 6.8v on individual batteries & 34v across the bank of 6 batteries.

According to the Static charge chart, the individual reading is too high, and the overall reading is too low.

With new cables installed, I'm lost.

Place the Neg probe on the main pack negative and (keeping that probe in place) start testing from the last battery to the first battery. If you know each individual battery is 6.6-6.8, then by adding in 1 battery at a time you will find the one that doesn't add up. then you can look closer at that one battery to determine if it is a bad connection, or if it is reversed or what exactly is causing the voltage drop.

What rabbitreborn said to find out why the pack reading low.

Just because Batteries and cables are only a year old doesn't mean they are good.

Your charger isn't seeing the cutoff voltage, so it stays on until the safety timer shuts it off. Charger probably A-OK.

As for the individual battery voltages being high according to chart. The chart voltages are after the batteries have rested about 12 hours after being charged, or driven about a mile.
Newer batteries read a bit higher, older batteries read a bit lower.

The charger has to see 44-46V to automatically shut off. That's about 7.5V per battery, so 6.6-6.8V just means the batteries still have some "Surface Charge", they'll drop down to about what the chart says in a few hours, or after a quick trip around the yard.

Let us know what you find. Pictures of problems are always appreciated.

Thanks JohnnieB & rabbitreborn

It's been several hours since I removed the charger and checked the voltage (got 34v at that time). I am now getting 39.6v across all batteries.

Either I misread the meter the first time, didn't have the probes tight against the posts, or the voltage has gone up.

I checked across each battery adding one battery each time as rabbitreborn recomended. I get 6.7v, 13.2v, 20v, 27v, 33v,39.6v.

If these are the reading I should get 3-4 hours after removing the charger (with no cart use), is the problem pointing to the charger?
