Default 84 EZ-GO Reverse problems

I have an 84 Ez-Go three wheel cart. I recently bought it from a auto machanic who had rebuilt the motor a while back. He told me everything worked fine, but the F/R switch needed to be cleaned for the reverse to work. After getting it home and doing a little work on it, that is not the problem. I cleaned the switch and re-wired everything to make sure everything was set up right and all cables are tight and clean. I noticed the first battery neg terminal had been welded back on. ?? After everything was ready, I put it in forward and it worked fine although it starts going before you give it gas (Might be a solinoid problem?). If you have any thought on that let me know, but that is not the main problem. As I put it in reverse it shot out sparks from the first neg battery cable and fried the cable right off the battery (This is where it had been welded before). To test if this was do to the F/R switch or something else, I rewelded the neg cable to the battery and swaped the S1 and S2 cables to the motor. I concluded that it is not the F/R switch. In Reverse it worked fine at this point, but when put in forward it starts to move in reverse for only a second then the cable to the first battery neg starts to smoke and wants to melt off the battery. Therefor I only left it there for about 3-4 seconds. What might be the problem here? Someone mentioned to me that it might be the field spring in the motor? Not really sure what this is or even if I am calling it by the proper name. Any ideas would be great.

There is also one other thing. I bought a used 36 volt battery charger that I plugged into the cart to charge. When I plug it in, it sounds like it is charging, but there is no reading on the charger. The needle just stays at 0. I am not sure it is charging. Any ideas?

Is your motor parallel or perpendicular to rear end?

Check all wiring for clean tight connections. Make sure pack is wired correctly in series. Check wiring against diagram available here.

When you hook up the charger check voltage at battery pack. Voltage should climb to ~45v at end of charge cycle. The ammeter on the charger may be bad.
