EZ-GO Electric Motor Stays On
Hello,
I have a 1990 EZ-GO Marathon, electric cart. Recently, when I take my foot off the accelerator pedal, the cart slows, but continues to move in the direction in which the F/R switch is positioned in. This happens regardless of the key position. I can turn the key off or on, and the cart will roll (slowly). I even disconnected the wires from the on/off switch to see if this would help, but it still rolls. It will only roll if the F/R switch is engaged. If you put the selector in neutral, the cart will NOT roll. So this is good, but the rest is bad. I have zero experience when it comes to golf carts as I am totally green on the electrical aspect of these things. I did notice that there is a resistor style unit in between the two battery banks. It is about 8 inches by 6 inches square and about 4 inches tall. It has 4 screws and bolts and 5 wires. One of the wires goes to the electric motor, the other 4 wires go up to the front and appear to be connected to the F/R selector on the outside of the switch. This resistor type unit is cracked, or at least the ceramic looking part of it is. I have owned the cart for about a year, and it has been cracked all along. My problem just started occurring about 3 days ago. I am not sure what it is. The throttle and associated linkage are adjusted properly. All of the moving mechanisms seem to function correctly. However, when I move the F/R selector to either position, it arcs an electrical spark and begins moving in the position in which I select. I have never noticed this before, because normally there is no juice flowing until you step on the accelerator pedal. The Hill Brake does hold it still, but I don't want to burn up the motor. Does anyone have any clues to what it might be, or where I should start looking? Your help will be greatly appreciated. I have installed 6 New batteries in this thing, but the problem occurred before the batteries were installed. Yes the old batteries were toast and didn't hold much of a charge. Thanks 94Cobra |

Re: EZ-GO Electric Motor Stays On
Sounds like the solenoid contacts are welded together.
There might be other issues also, but I'm not familiar with the innards of Marathon carts. |

Re: EZ-GO Electric Motor Stays On
Hey Cobra!
Is your cart really a resistor cart? Not controller? Can you post under seat pics? I think my Marathon is also a 90 and it is a controller cart but I just noticed the other day that the bracket is still there that would hold the "throttle" assembly if it was to be a resistor cart. If your cart is a resistor cart then I wonder if it has those copper pucks/contacts with each of them leading a (large) wire to the resistor unit and if by any chance one of those round copper contacts (that the go pedal wiper arm sweeps across) has come loose/dislodged and overlaps to make contact with the next one even with the pedal released? (I've seen that once) All this would be mounted on a flat vertical board. Plus I wonder if any micro switch is staying/stuck closed. Just some ideas! I don't claim to know much : ) A controller cart would have a nice solid looking vertically mounted "brick" with possibly two rounded corners and some big flat bars sticking out on top for the large cable connections. And a small metal contraption where your go pedal linkage would lead to.(Potentiometer). With only small gauge wires coming out of it. Barna |

Re: EZ-GO Electric Motor Stays On
A marathon resistor board looks like this and the contacts can weld together but yours probably either melted or arced enough (booggered up) so that the wiper arm no long goes to zero?

Re: EZ-GO Electric Motor Stays On
Thank you everyone for the ideas. yes my cart is a resistor cart...
The pictures that ScottyB posted looks identical to my cart. The resistor problem that 72volt_ezgo mentions, I have not checked on yet. I need to pull the cover off the resistor and have a looksee. JohnnieB also mentioned the solenoid. I think I will replace it just because. It is old, rusty and the terminals are corroded. As a matter of fact, my cart looks very similar if not worse then the pictures ScottyB posted. Lots of rust. Bad terminal connections and the laundry list goes on. Looks like it may have been used around salt water, or the old batteries really did a number on the old gal. (yes they were pretty bad, and leaked) I will take some pics tomorrow night when I get home from work and post them so you can see what it looks like. Probably needs a complete refurb.... I am sure it would not hurt it any. Thanks again for your quick replies. |

Re: EZ-GO Electric Motor Stays On
Do you guys know if I can convert my cart to a controller style? Perhaps without changing the motor?

Re: EZ-GO Electric Motor Stays On
I would toss everything out except the batteries and the key switch
Your late model marathon will convert to modern solid state and now is good time to do it before you put more money into that tired toaster oven........ I have recently developed a conversion kit for these 1987 and up Marathons that missed the Controller upgrade. |
