Stereo Power System ????
I just finished putting a little stereo system in my cart. I have a 100 watt (RMS) head unit and a little 30 watt EQ with a single channel running an old sub woofer from a home stereo system. It sounds pretty dang good but now I am concerned about battery life. I realize that drawing this much juice means that I really need a seperate 12 volt battery so I don't ruin two of my 8 volt golf batteries.
Does anyone have a high or decent power stereo and if so, what battery are you running? I am planning on getting some kind of deep cycle battery but would like to not spend a fortune getting the $200 Optima or a 90lb marine battery either. I am looking for other people experiences such as "I have a 150 watt pioneer and run for over 3 hours with battery X" or something like that. I assume that Sams may have the best deal on batteries but am not sure how many amp hours or CCA rating would be best for radio and maybe some H3 headlights. I did put the headlights on (fog lights really) while the stereo was playing and it dropped the sound out and caused bad clipping so I may leave the headlights on the 8 volts and just put the stereo by itself on the 12 volt. Any suggestions?? |

Re: Stereo Power System ????
I have a Pioneer system running all the mids and highs off the headunit with a 12" sub driven by a 400 watt mono block amp. All this powered by a Optima Blue top marine battery I've had it playing for hours even with the headlights and have never run out of juice. As far as batteries go I feel you get what you pay for if you want long use and good battery life you have to get a good battery to start with. JMHO....

Re: Stereo Power System ????
I have a cheap, used parts store starting battery powering my stand-alone 12v accessory system. Runs my 200w (peak) head unit for an entire 10-14 hr work shift plus the lights, cell phone charger and winch as needed. I installed a cig lighter socket that I plug a charger/ maintainer in to at the end of the day. Keep the battery full of water and don't over drain the charge. It will be fine. Even a high power head unit draws a pathetically minute amount of current. If a stereo is all you want to run, I'd power it with a 12v motorcycle battery.

Re: Stereo Power System ????
Those examples are just what I was looking for, thanks. I guess my drain rate will be somewhere between you two since I have a 200 watt peak stereo and my mono "amp" for the sub is an old 80watt RMS equalizer with one blown channel. It is ghetto but sounds pretty good. Luckily EZGO has the perfect driver's side spot for an extra battery.
