Input shaft leaks oil into motor
I am having to replace my input shaft it seems. I just got my new EMP motor and found that the input shaft was leaking oil into the old motor and the spline teeth on the input shaft are torn up as well. Is there suppossed to be some seal to keep oil from coming out via the input shaft bearing? Right now the only thing between the rear end oil and the motor area is that front input shaft bearing. Is that supposed to act as the seal too?
P.S. Photos are after I cleaned everything up. There was lots of black crap in this thing. I combo of dirt, oil and motor brush dust I guess. |

Re: Input shaft leaks oil into motor
I just went through and replaced all these bearings myself. The O-ring for that bore goes between the bearing O.B. race and case and could allow some oils to seep onto the motor shaft. What I see in your pre disassembly pictures looks like the output shaft bearing is not a sealed bearing. There looks to be bearing grease in and on that bearing. If that is true, there is the problem! That then would make me wonder about the rest of the bearings? Did someone replace them all and put some in the wrong place. I know the 2 bearings on that input shaft are differently sized. The intermediate gears, with the freeze plugs covering them, are not self sealed bearings. Did you notice if either of those was a sealed bearing?
I'm just going off all that bearing grease I see in the picture. Here are my after pictures. Hope that helps. Enjoy your new motor |

If you look in my build thread there are pics of the removal and install with the o-ring. Good luck

Re: Input shaft leaks oil into motor
That's mainly carbon build up in your motor. That is normal. As far as that bearin it looks wrong. Which could have lead to excessive bearing play on the shaft and tore up the splines. It will seep a tiny bit but you my friend have a leak.

In the exploded diagram I see part labled 19 or 20, it looks like a big o-ring behind the bearing. What is that??? |

Re: Input shaft leaks oil into motor
OK so I guess I need to get that too. I didn't have one before and I don't think that anyone has had this apart before.
