Default New to me 02 TXT PDS Charging Question

Ok I am new to carts as this is the first I have owned but worked on a couple of friends that have gotten them in the past couple years. This cart is a 36v and batteries seemed to be dead. I pulled the caps and they definitely need some water and then I wanted to pop them on the charger as the guy I bought it from had no clue. It was sitting in the yard and said his son got it and was driving it this summer. It appears to have 5 trojan batteries and one champion battery. They all appear to be in decent condition.

I really just want to get this thing running a little to determine if I need new batteries then I was looking at a 48v conversion. This is def going to be a project as she is in stock form and we all know that is not acceptable.

Do I just pop it on the charger or do I need to disconnect the batteries and use my regular charger to get them charged up?

If they are dead, you need to charge them seperatly. The charger will not start until it see a certian number of volts, i think 22 volts. I have been able to charge the first 2 batteries and get the cart charger going.

Typically somewhere in the 24-26v range works, depending upon the charger.
You do not need to disconnect any of the batteries to charge 2 at a time with a 12v charger..... when you get to the second or third pair plug your charger in with the 12v still running ~ If it sees enough voltage it will come on and you can remove the 12v charger and let the 36v charger run until it finishes or times out.

Thank you for the heads up. I just filled up the batteries with water as some of them were low. When I plugged the charger it it would not do anything so that explains alot. So to charge two at a time to I need to put my neg on one battery and positive on the other battery? Any special settings I should set for my charger? Again thank you for the help on this.

It is safest to use a voltmeter to test your intended connection points if you are not familiar with series connected batteries. See the diagram below. Set your charger to 20 or 30 amps if it will go that high.

Thank you Scottyb. I think I have it down. I am sure I will be contacting you soon for some of your goodies. Just another quick question there are 3 wires on the charging receptacle. Black, white and a little red cable. What is the little red able for as I am downloading the techs manual. It looks to be disconnected so trying to figure out if it is needed or not.

Small red wire is a safety interlock, to keep the cart from running when the charger is connected. If the reed switch interlock goes bad most techs simply connect the F&R micro switch to the battery main instead of the interlock as done in later years.....

What Scotty said, except a PDS cart doesn't have a F&R micro-switch.

The Red wire is looking for B+ coming through the Reed switch. Unless Pin-5 of J-1 of the controller sees B+, it won't activate the solenoid.
If the Reed switch is bad, attaching the Red wire to B+ will bypass it.

I think I am going to take a pic of the battery compartment along with the receptacle and see if you guys see anything else glaring. At this point I am just trying to get the batteries charged and then see if the cart functions. Then I figure since I spent 4 hours cleaning out the garage yesterday I can put the cart up on jack stands and start the transformation process over the winter.
