The old charger died again. Instead of taking it in for service at another $125, I figured the following solution might work. We have the two golf carts. The old one is just used for maintenance.

Basically I want to know if I can swap out the harness and receptacle on the old golf cart to match the plug style on the powerwise.

They both seem to have the same specs on the charger (from what I can see)

I do see that the Powerwise plug has 3 wires and the old one two wires. I am assuming that the 3rd is a ground wire. My assumption is that if it is a ground wire, then it would just serve as a dummy ground and not a real one. Or does that third wire serve as something other then the ground wire?

Any other recommendation on what I can try or do are more then welcome.

Thanks,

David

you can swap out the cart receptacle with no problem. your third wire in the new receptacle is for the reed switch, which you probabably don't need on the old cart. shop around and maybe look for a usde one as they are pricy. you can look for one in the used parts forum.

also welcome to BGW!

Bad assumption!!!!!!

The smaller third wire is connected to the Positive terminal (BL+) inside the new charger receptacle. (Via a reed switch, or it may be a dead short in a new receptacle.)

Suggest you remove it completely for older cart.
Hold on to it, it may come in handy when/if the reed switch in the newer cart fails.

Come to think of it, the third wire is on the DC cord, that is on the good charger that I am keeping. I wouldn't need to replace that.

Only the receptacle and harness on the old golf cart, that it plugs into. Now to find that part.

The 3 wheel model I am going to replace the harness and receptacle looks exactly like the one pictured in this thread HERE

But, the one we have is in much worse shape physically. They bought it brand new, and the previous management team were and older couple that didn't have time to take care of it as it should be.

The one pictured seems to be an 88 model. My charger date on that one says 88 also. So, in all likely hood, it too is also a 88 golf cart.

Thanks for the great advice so far.

A few words of caution:

1. The third wire in the Powerwise charger plug is the Charger's battery sense wire. It connects to the the Negative terminal on the cart's charger receptacle via the Aux. Contact in the charger plug.

2. The third wire in the Cart's charger receptacle is part of the Cart's Key-Switch Interlock (KSI) chain and connects to the Positive terminal on the Cart's charger receptacle. A magnet in the Charger Plug opens the Reed Switch in the Cart's receptacle, disabling the cart so it cannot be driven while connected to the charger. (The reed switched had a lot of failures and was bypassed at the factory by E-Z-GO in later years.)

Both the Charger's plug and Cart's receptacle have third wires, but they serve entirely different purposes and are mutually exclusive.

Good luck with your project and be safe.

Thanks Johnnie. The actual Powerwise Charger is all staying the same.

The old golf cart there is only two wires coming off the harness and receptacle. One goes to a positive terminal on a battery, and the other two a negative terminal on the battery.

The 2003 Textron golf cart there are 3.
One to a positive battery terminal, and one to a negative battery terminal.

The third wire (red) in the manual it shows a title of "Direction Selelctor" on that diagram it shows that the red wire connects into the "Direction Selector Assembly" what is labeled only as #22 (Micro Switch.)

When I replace out the harness and receptacle on the 88 to match the same receptacle which is in the 2003 Textron (73051G), will leaving the 3rd wire unplugged (red wire) cause any issues?

This is only a guess, but it looks like the direction is controlled electronically in the 2003 once I move the handle to either forward or reverse.

In the 88 it looks like when I switch the knob to forward or reverse it is controlled by some physical contacts behind the knob instead of electronically. My assumption would then be that the 3rd wire could be disconnected and still allow the batteries to charge fine, since the 88 doesnt have a electronic F/R assembly controlling it.

Thanks,

David

No, probably not.
The safety hazard is that it is connected to the Positive Terminal in the receptacle, so you'll have BL+ waving around in mid-air looking for something to short out on.
At a minimum, I'd at least tape the connector on the loose end of the Red wire so no bare metal is exposed. (On 88 Cart)

Sounds like you've got a TXT with a Series wound motor rather than a Sepex motor (PDS).
You'll need to identify which it is when you ask questions about the 2003.

If it is has a Series wound motor, total notor current runs through the F/R control just like it does in the 88. Control looks different physically, but electrically they're about the same.

Plug your Cart's serial number into this website and it'll tell you what it is.
