12V auxillary outlet smoking my stuff!
Ok, I had a 12V Marine outlet installed on my cart at the same time they installed my head/tail lights. I plugged my gps unit in it to see what my speed was, and the gps wouldn't work. I tried it in my truck, and nothing. Replaced the inline fuse, and nothing. I just received some strobe lights and when I plugged them in, I heard a pop, so I pulled the plug out quickly, and they still work in my truck outlet (thankfully)! I checked the inside of the outlet and it reads 11.9V, so it didn't pop a possible fuse. So this morning I plugged in a spare plug that I don't need and it immediately started to smoke, so I removed it.
Question is...Can the terminals on the back be wired backwards? I'm not sure if the +/- must be on the correct terminal on these or if it doesn't matter. |

Yes it matters and they can be wired backwards, the center is positive
and the sides are negative. |

Same here. All of them I have ever hooked up are tested were this way. + on the center and - on the sides.

Thanks. I'll try to get in there and see how it's hooked up, but my inclination is that it's backwards. Smoke=Not Good

If it's wired backwards, where did you get your 11.9V from?
How did you measure it? If you used a volt meter and probed the case of the lighter for the ground, and the end or hot for the voltage, I would think it's wired right. Not sure whats going on. |

I did use the volt meter, but it was a quick check while running out the door and I thought about it. Didn't check to make sure I was putting red/red and black/black. Maybe it is really -11.9V...if that's what it would read if it still worked that way.

Re: 12V auxillary outlet smoking my stuff!
Not sure Rib. I haven't been able to see how it was wired. They also installed a 48-12V converter, so I would assume it's tied into that. I will have to pull the cup holder and trace the wires. Thanks for the suggestions all!
