Default Do I need new batteries?

On 07-05-2009, 06:50 PM, jcourtney986 posted "Do I need new batteries?"

jcourtney986 was using Champion CPGC-110 Batteries.

scottyb, gatormeup, rusty1, dougmcp, pggroves and others kindly helped. Thank you in advance for your help.

I have the same issue, but maybe different enough to justify others' time.

Cart is used on a hilly vineyard. 36Volt, 6 batteries.

Batteries from 2010. (One battery is an Interstate GC2-XHD-UT - not relevant)
37.5Volts total.
Greater than 6.1 Volts on each battery at rest.

Drive the cart downhill 1/4 mile. Drive cart back up the hill and on the first or second trip, it dies.

Checked each battery separately under this load. Two batteries drop to below 3Volts when cart stops.

In short, then, when a battery drops to below 3 Volts, even if fairly new/well maintained, is that the end? Metaphysically, does it proceed to Battery Heaven? Because these have not been morally good batteries.

Sounds to me like those two batteries have shorted cells. Since new enough you may get a prorated discount on replacement. Just know that the two new replacements will soon be just like the remaining four.

I'm assuming you've checked all the usual suspects in cables, connections, electrolyte levels, etc. etc.

You could plug in a 12v battery temporarily (for testing) to see if the two offending batteries are indeed the issue but it sure sounds like it to me...

Good luck.

This may help...

The ones that read 3V's are shot! What do your other ones show during the same conditions? If they will charge and pass the load test, you can probably get two to replace the bad ones.

I want to know, metaphysically speaking, what does an immoral battery do?

It's current flows from + to - instead of - to +!

Though I've never seen a battery do this, I've often come across computer cables that were apparently born with the wrong identity. They opted to have gender-benders surgically installed.
