Costco GC2 6 Volt Cart Batteries
I bought 6 of these 7/10, I have failing, it hardly makes 18 holes and the battery is down to 5.8 volts. Less then 18 months old. No warranty left. Another 80 bucks for a new one.

Re: Costco GC2 6 Volt Cart Batteries
Buying Golf Cart Batteries is like Buying Oats.
If you want nice, clean, fresh oats, you gotta pay the price. If you settle for oats that have already been through the horse ... That comes a little a little cheaper. Kidding aside, considering your location, I wonder how much the environmental conditions contributed to the seemingly early demise. How long do other batteries last on the Mojave Desert? |

Re: Costco GC2 6 Volt Cart Batteries
Most expect up to 4-5 years, I played 150 rounds so I am on the extreme side a bit, but a 95 dollar battery should get at least 3+. thier warranty is pretty standard only 5 % credit after a year. Give me a $125 battery that will last longer

Re: Costco GC2 6 Volt Cart Batteries
Just curious, but how deeply do you discharge before recharging?
Sounds like you got a sub-par battery, but some people have pretty good luck with batteries from Costco, Sam's Club, Napa, etc. The trick is breaking the in properly to get maximum capacity and then keeping them charged to the highest State of Charge that is possible/practical. Scottyb has a pretty good battery break-in procedure on his website and a lot of good battery info in general. http://www.cartsunlimited.net/ Just read everything with "Battery" in the title to get max life out of your batteries, no matter what brand they are. |

Re: Costco GC2 6 Volt Cart Batteries
The Mojave is above 110 degrees 100 days a year on average. It can be in the 80s for weeks anytime of the year. This type of heat is a battery's nemesis. Damage can be done recharging at high temp (over 90) or in uninsulated 135 degree garages. I expect this coupled with high evaporation requiring frequent water replacement would shorten the average useful life of the best battery..... of which, the least expensive battery is not.
4 yrs would be good in my book. Of course, personal use habits determine useful life more than environment. Deep discharge and leaving the batteries to sit in a state of discharge are 2 things that shorten the useful life of a battery. Buy the biggest Crown batteries that fit in your cart when you can. (CR225) That works out to less than $0.50 a day for battery power. I hope this helps. |

Re: Costco GC2 6 Volt Cart Batteries
I normally have it about 2/3 or less discharged when I get home and I always charge it immediately when I get home, not much time to break in a battery, I only have 6 and I use the cart 4-5 times a week from 4-6 hrs. There are about 400 carts where I play and everyone expects 4-5 years from their new batteries, they use Trojan, interstate, napa, us battery, costco etc, I just got a bad one, works well for about 2.5 hrs then crashes..
Thanks for the tip on break in, Not quite 110 here but it does get near 100 in July and August and in the low 30 at night in Dec Jan Feb, tee off at 36 degrees and finish at 68 degrees in winter, 55 to 95 in summer. Quote:

That's not the Mojave Desert I lived in for 20 yrs? The desert I lived in went as high as 126 and as low as 7. But I was only there for a short while. Anyway, one bad battery can bring a pack to it's knees. If you can identify the weak one you may be able to replace it with a similar age and size unit and go on for a few more years? |

(Going below 50% is considered a no-no for battery longivity) Attached are two charts: The first showing SoC vs open terminal voltage and also includes Specific Gravity of electrolyte. The second illustrates theoretical life expectancy vs average SoC. Even if the typical SoC only goes down to 66%, you might consider going to a higher amp-hour battery when you replace your current set. Of course, it would take some number crunching to determine if the higher AH batteries would be worth the higher initial cost. |

Re: Costco GC2 6 Volt Cart Batteries
Good Battery info Johnnie
We find categorically that the larger a battery is installed in any golf cart the less likely there will be performance complaints or useful life issues ever, period. There are no scientific #s or charts for this information... just a long line of satisfied customers. Buying the 225 AH battery over the 200AH does pay off in the long run. The extra 25ah times 6 almost equals another battery worth of capacity. Of course, user habits weigh in heavily. Discharge rates and levels, recharge habits, and maintenance habits all factor into the equation. Oddly enough, the same people who are willing to buy the best, follow the manufacture's recommendation on use and maintenance the best. |

Re: Costco GC2 6 Volt Cart Batteries
My new battery made all the difference, unfortunately I am not real confident in Costco Batteries right now, I will know better in about 6 months to see if the other 5 hold up to at least 2 years.
If it was 125 or as low as 9. it would be tough to play much golf, where in the desert were you, Cadiz or Bagdad |
