Default Just got my first EZ GO

Just got into a 95 TXT series. Final goal is 5" lift and the tires to go with it to use as a hunting vehicle. I've been instructed to change the controller, heavier gauge wires, lift kit, etc...after I clean the terminals and such up, where do I start...? Not too mechanically inclined, but not an idiot, trying to do on a budget, just don't want to get overwhelmed. Thanks for the help guys!

Start with 2g wires and a Heavy Duty Forward Reverse Switch.

Then decide if you want to stay 36 volt or upgrade to 48. Get a programable Controller and Heavy Duty Solenoid. Then get a lift or you can do the lift after the wires your choice.

I'm in the same boat your are. Just got a 96 medalist. I installed a 5" lift and tires from trademark this weekend to get the ball rolling. I am going to build a back rack and front brush guard and put the road feeder on it here shortly, then spray it camouflage. Now power is the question when it comes to a budget build. I originally wanted to go 48, but with certain circumstances I have decided to stay 36. There are several people on here running similar set ups. I have a ranger to do the hard work, i just need a quiet corn spreader. I've came up with this recipe.

5" lift w/ 22" tires.
6 Trojan t-105's
heavy duty fnr
2 gauge wires

Leaves it open to go to 48 if desired. Just need a controller and two more batteries.

That mix though allows you to use your 36 charger, gives you pretty good run time, and will get you around ok. And, won't break the bank. I'm going to start a thread here once i figure out my exact camo pattern i'm going for and get my racks built. Good luck on it.

Might be some in-intelligent questions but I'm curious....why do I need th eupgrade the controller. And what does a HD Forward Reverse switch do that the stock does not? Also the solenoid, what does that do? Thanks guys.....

I'll do my best to answer your questions. I'm not an expert, but I have built an entire cart (Thanks to ScottyB! )

Controller: The controller is what regulates power that is being transferred from the batteries to the motor. If you want to climb hills, push big tires and/or carry multiple passengers you will HAVE to have more power get from the batteries to the motor.

HD F/R: The OEM one is lightweight/thin. Everything on your cart involves transfer of current from one place to another. If you try to force lots of amps into a thin device, you will cook it. The HD one is heavy duty.

Solenoid: The solenoid is the main electrical contactor (switch) that allows battery current to flow from the batteries to the motor. If you shove too much power through it, you will cook it.

Hope this helps.

Trust me, no question is unintelligent. I know, I'm still asking. This is something I have learned. The reason you will want to upgrade your controller, F&R switch, cables and solenoid is because of the power, (amperes) drain you have caused by asking the motor to turn the new, bigger wheels and tires. Upgrades on all these parts means there is no, "funnel" effect with the power drain. If, for example, you upgraded the less expensive items and stayed with the stock controller, it would become your funnel. The power would flow more easily through the new cables, the new F&R switch has bigger contacts to allow the power to flow more freely, the new solenoid is designed to contain the heat and allow the power to flow. But, the stock controller was designed for smaller, lighter wheels and tires. They create a smaller power draw to accomplish the same speed/torque. As the increased flow reaches the stock controller the bottle neck will cause the controller to overheat. The heat will drain your ampreage and reduce the power to the motor. This will cause the motor to over work, (draw power and heat up), just to do what it used to do when it was stock. Ultimately, you will have a cable melt down if not a fire and may have to replace both the controller and the motor.

Anyway, that's my take. But, hey, I'm a newbie too.

Sounds great. Excellent explanation....so I'll need to replace the electrical system before the lift and tires it sounds like..thanks again

It DOES get your attention, eh? That was from a stuck solenoid. Overheated and the rest is history.
