Dead In 3 Years
Up front, thanks for the comments and suggestions. I have a 36 Volt 2005 EzGo TXT. According to the previous owner the batteries were replaced in 2009. The batteries have been great over the past year and a half that I have owned the cart. I have played 27 holes multiple times with no problems.
I had planed on playing golf throughout the winter on nice days but for whatever reason, I haven't played since October. I did leave my cart charger plugged in the entire winter (3 months). When I got the cart out at the beginning of this month, I played one hole before the cart went dead. I plugged the cart in and returned a few days later and I got 4 holes in before I had to literally push the cart back to the shed. I let the cart charge overnight and made three trips back to the shed to unplug and plug in the cart to make sure the batteries had opportunity to get charged. Thinking that I could at least get 9 holes in this time, I tried to play again tonight and I got one hole in. What gives, I thought i could get at least two more seasons in before I had to replace the batteries. I have 5 batteries that are reading 5.7 volts and one battery that is 5.4 volts. The batteries are Interstate U2200UTL, Deep Cycle, RC @75A - 122 and 20 amp hour rating -232. Other questions are: - Would you consider this common or uncommon? - What electrical components might be causing a short that would drain or destroy the batteries? - What should I do now? I should possibly mention that this cart has the two independent headlights/taillights build into the bumpers (factory) and the forward and reverse toggel switch on the dash and the Run/Tow switch on the seat panel below the passenger seat. (Just in case this wiring scheme has anything to do with possible issues) Thanks to all you experts. Last edited by Randa; 02-20-2012 at 11:22 PM.. Reason: Additional Information |

Re: Dead In 3 Years
is that the voltage after charging ? are you sure the charger is charging ? If there the flooded type batterys you can add some water/epson salt mixture and do a few charge /discharges and they might come back to life.. mine have come back to life but not 100% back to life yet. thats after three cycles of charge.

27 holes on one charge is a lot of discharge. My guess is premature failure. Unless your charger has an auto-maintain setting, leaving it plugged in that long did your batteries no favors.

The UTL (utility) 2200ah battery was a truck & van deep cycle battery. I say was because it has been replaced by the 2200ah 6 Volt, 232Ah (@ 20 HR) Workaholic battery. Without DVM (DMM) readings it is difficult to say exactly what is happening. It does sound liike dead batteries. DO NOT PUSH or tow the sepex cart with first putting the system in 'TOW', motor and controller damage is eminent. |

Re: Dead In 3 Years
I checked my batteries and they all read approximatly 5.7 Volts except one which was lower at 5.3. That certainly is below 6 but I was wishing the batteries just wern't fully charged.

Re: Dead In 3 Years
Yep I've only played 27 holes twice. My typical game is usually 9 due to time constraints but I do play 18 a few times each month. My point in including that was to just point out that the cart could get through the round. Could you or someone please tell me what an "auto maintain" charger does. It was my understanding that once the batteries charged, the unit shut down. I realize that probobly isn't what you mean by "auto maintain" but I did think that would keep the batteries from damage in extended plug-ins.....believing my biggest risk was the unlikly powersurge or lightning strike. Please educate me.

Re: Dead In 3 Years
I'll let Scotty give ya the good answer. But the short answer is that your batteries are better suited to shorter duty cycles than golf cart batteries.
