chager automatic?
Hello as most I'm new here,, my first posting, this site seems to be the hot spot... I'm sorry for the up coming questions as I dont know what I'm doing :)
I live in Tehachapi Calif, so I dont have any shops to take it to unless I borrow a trailer and drive it 45 mins to one, and thats a big hassle right now, so any help would be great. thanks.. Ok I got a golf cart for my 50th bithday and its nice but I have no idea what I'm geting myself into? I dont know the yr or make besides easy go, it's lifted and in great condtion. I'll read how to post photos and do so for you today or? This cart needed new batteries, so I pick'm up at Cosco for under 575. My carts a 36v and someone made it street legal and off road, I guess for the beach or desert? When I first got my cart I tried to charge the exsiting Batteries and they were dead as could be, not one cell had life. I didnt see the charger turn on or anything so I took the charger to a golf cart shop and they tested it and said it worked fine, so I replaced the batteries and the cart runs great besides alittle sluglish up hills as expected with bigger tires and being elect? I ran it for about 45 mins and put it on the charger and the charger didnt turn on? What would you sugest at this time? how do I test if its where I plug the charger in my cart or could there be a fuse from the charger to the batteries? Im lost as you can see and will be bugging you guys for a bit.. Thanks Greg Oh if anyone lives in Tehachapi please get ahold of me ;) |

Re: chager automatic?
A good start would be to let us know what year and model your EZGO is, or find the serial number near the charging port and post that. Does the cart have a little gold tag on the side that says "Precision Drive" ??In addition, let us know what model charger you have. Provide as much information as you can. Get ready to start learning about your cart, welcome ! -RAY

Re: chager automatic?
No tags there, it has One inside each glovebox. No dates on them tho. One has E299 an under it has 1173691. Other has a CE plate for kw, type, kg. Charger is a power wise. I'm emailing myself photos to post so hope that helps me. Thanks so much for any help

Re: chager automatic?
When you replaced your batteries did you make sure to reconnect the charging receptacle wires back onto the batteries? It's easy to forget to put them back on!

Re: chager automatic?
Here is a link from ShopEzgo and how to identify your EZGO. The third picture for the TXT carts is small and hard to interpret. After raising the seat you have to flip up the back plastic trim piece to see the white sticker on the frame.

Re: chager automatic?
I went to that link and put in your 1173691 and here is the result:
Model Year: 1999 Make/Model: Electric TXT Golf Car (DCS) You have a powerwise charger and that is a good one !! Johnnieb should be along to help you check things out. - RAY |

Re: chager automatic?
Your serial number may say it's a 1999 TXT DCS, but being lifted with big tires, I doubt if it still has a stock DCS controller.
You'll have to take off the controller cover to find out for sure. Be sure to put the Run/Tow switch in the "Tow" position before doing any work on the electrical system and Remove the Negative lead from the Right-Rear battery before removing controller cover. Which Powerwise charger do you have? There are "Powerwise", "Powerwise+", "Powerwise II", and some later variants and each comes in a couple different flavors, but they all turn on about the same. They sense the battery pack voltage and if it is about 30V or higher, they turn on and stay on until the 36V battery pack voltage reaches about 44V-46V. Since the cart shop said the charger was working okay, the problem is most likely in your cart. Check for battery pack voltage on the two terminals in the cart's charger recpitacle. If it isn't there, check the two larger wires to the battery pack. The white wire connects to the + terminal on the Right-Front battery via an inline fuse. The black wire goes to the - terminal on the Right-Rear battery. If it is there, try wiggling the charger plug around a bit and then hold it up with light pressure and see if charger comes on. If it does, clean the contacts. The charger senses B- (battery pack negative) via a silver colored spring contact in the charger plug touching the outside of the negative post (Radsok) in the cart's charger receptacle. B+ is sensed inside the charge via the wire that connects to the Positive Radsok. Here is a schematic for a "Powerwise" charger. The two wire coming into the right side of the box labeled "Control Board" are the battery sense wires. Also, here's an exploded view of the charger plug showing the spring contact. (Item 36) If you don't have a DMM, get one, you'll be needing It An inexpensive 3 1/2 digit one will do. |

Re: chager automatic?
Wow, u guys are great. I'm so stupid!!! I found the ground wire Wasn't hooked up? So now the charger works, wow can someone smack me please. The charger just say power wise, no numbers next to it. It started it's charge at 18 amps? Now please bear with me as I don't know what any of this means right now, does it mean the batteries are low or? Also will it shut off by itself? I also found out my wife has paperwork on it so here's the info. Yup a 1999 yr doesn't say model type on papers tho, Ok here comes the stupid questions :) what's the controller box? Is it the black one with the run/tow switch on it? What's the DCS controller, and whats it look like, and how can I tell if it has an upgraded one?
Thanks for ur help so far and will post photos today as my I phone won't let me down load so have to get my real camera. Really thanks guys |

Re: chager automatic?
Charger is working - Great.
A Powerwise charger is current limited by design, so starting off at 18A is fairly typical and that's how your charger will start out pretty much regardless of battery's State of Charge. It'll stay at 18A or so for up to about half an hour and then decrease down to about 5-8A (Maybe higher maybe lower - lots of variables) until charger shuts off. Those being new batteries, they will charge for several hours, possibly 12 or longer. New batteries have top be broken in proper to get maximum storage capacity, here is the procedure. http://www.cartsunlimited.net/Batter...n_Methods.html While you are on the site, read everything with the word "Battery" in the title - lots of good info. bigstik40 looked up your serial number on the website Rickochet provided, so it rolled out of the factory as a "1999 TXT DCS" The DCS (Drive Control System) controllers don't handle big tires or low voltage well, so people that lift carts and put on tall tires often replace it with an aftermarket unit, either when they put on the big tires or when it fails. But there are lifted carts with DCS controllers out there. ---------------- The controller is under the cover with the Run/Tow switch on it. Here's a picture of what mine looked like originally. The solenoid is the silver colored object, the controller is the black box. A DCS controller will have a 10 pin connector on top, where the label is on mine. Hope this helps |
