Default 48 Volt To 12 Volt Converter Efficiency

What is the efficiency for a 48 volt to 12 volt converter? I've used 12 volt to 120 volt inverters and managed to completely kill my truck battery using just a telescope and laptop to photograph a lunar eclipse. It was a 300 watt inverter. I'm guessing those types of inverters are horribly inefficient.

I'd like to buy a big enough converter to power current loads and handle an amp for a future subwoofer. Would I be better off buying two, one for current loads and one that just powers my sub when I decide to use it?
