98 EZGO brakes

Haven't had it very long. Did paint it and put some nice wheels on it but think I have a brake problem. Very touchy brakes. Squeaks when you start out but then goes away. Looked underneath and one of the 2 cables coming from the back looks like it is unwinding and it's only held on by about half the strands. What am I up against and how much of a problem changing it and does it have anything to do with the squeaks and touchy brakes? Thanks in advance

The cable is fairly easy to change. Sounds like your brake shoes are dragging causeing the squeaks. If your familiar with automotive brake shoes these are basically the same. You might need to pull the drums so you can inspect the brakes. If you decide to rebuild the brakes pull both drums....then rebuild one side at a time....I always do this just in case I need to look at one to get everything back together right. This way you always have one together tolook at.

my cart does this when i let it set too long, especially when humid. pull the drums and sand drums and shoes with 120 grit paper, clean with acetone and go.

thanks for getting back to me. Sounds like some good ideas. I am familiar with auto brake shoes but wasn't sure about that cable. Hopefully that is a part I can pick up at a local parts store that deals with carts . Thanks again

Hey Guys - I have another brake issue - When putting my cart back in the trailer when the ramps were rather steep, I managed to sheer off the bracket that holds the brake cables near the front. I was told that this bracket is part of the chassis - but want to try to make a part that we can weld into place. Mine is a 1991 model (22191 - so is that Feb 21, 1991?) - I actually bent the rod that leads to the spring that sets the parking brake - so it looks like we may to replace that piece. Any of you have any experience with this? Anne
