Can a converter be used as a charger .....
I will be adding a converter for use with lights, radio, 12 volt accessories etc.
To overcome the converter DC-DC efficiency issue, can I use a 12 volt battery as the "storage" for all the 12 volt accessories and just have the converter go from the main pack to the 12 volt battery? Do the converters have diode protection to prevent back feed into the 36 volt pack? I would guess doing this would also allow the converter to keep the 12 volt battery charged, especially when the cart is plugged in. I bought this converter before I did enough research and am now wondering if it will be sufficient. Golf Cart Voltage Reducer 36V to 12 VOLT 18 AMPS NEW http://www.ebay.com/itm/150743952282...84.m1439.l2649 BTW, the above eBay vendor has stupid shipping times - 2 plus weeks. Anyone have opinions on the above converter? The converter mentioned by Scottie as being on sale never showed up anytime I looked on his website, so I just ended up ordering the switch plate and meter. |

Re: Can a converter be used as a charger .....
Can a converter be used as a charger? Maybe, but probably won't keep a 12V deep cycle battery charged to Max.
The 100% State of Charge voltage for a 12V deep cycle battery is 12.73V The daily charge voltage for a 12V deep cycle battery is 14.8V The Float charge voltage for a 12V deep cycle battery is 13.2V What is the output voltage from your converter? Probably be better off with a 12V charger and charge at same time you charge main battery pack, or use a solar panel. |

Re: Can a converter be used as a charger .....
I would not waste pack amps to charge a 12v. The small starting battery I have for all my stuff will run it all for a good, long time. The whole idea behind the stand-alone set-up is to use the pack only to drive the cart. Otherwise you're just as well off to pull accessory current from the pack and not bother with the 12v at all.
