EZ GO Charger Not charging handle getting hot
I have an early 90's model EZ GO golf cart. The charger does not seem to be shutting off when it has fully charged. The handle gets hot and the metal prongs start to almost melt to the inside of the receptacle.
We have replaced the handle part and the receptacle and while it helped prolong the problem it has not fixed it. It only last about a month working right and now it is back to not shutting off and getting hot. The charger itself does not get hot just the handle that goes into the receptacle. We drive it most every day and only certain days does it get really hot and sometimes it does that within 30 minutes of being on the charger. Other times it charges normal and works fine. The batteries seems as though they are still getting a good charge. Any suggestions? |

If the charger never shuts off on it's own check for a bad battery.
If the plug is intermittently getting hot change the receptacle. |

Re: EZ GO Charger Not charging handle getting hot
We have already replaced the receptacle and the cord handle going into the cart receptacle.
Someone mentioned that we might need a new timer? Does this sound accurate? My husband has cleaned all of the connections and cables. |

I'm not sure...
Heat is an indicator of resistance. Not shutting off is a separate problem. I'm a little confused which problem you're having? |

Re: EZ GO Charger Not charging handle getting hot
What does your ammeter on the charger read when you first start it and then after a few hours? It should start at 20 - 25amps and lower to 8 - 10amps after a few hours. Did you replace the terminal ends in both the plug and the receptacle? Also inspect both the plug and receptacle for any melting, which would not allow the terminals to make contact properly.
As far as the charger shutting off, it may take 12hrs or so to turn off. Can you post what voltage you have for your total battery pack before you start the charging and then 3 or 4hrs after it has been charging, and while the charger is on. This will give us an idea if a battery problem is involved. |
