Default Alltrax Plug Brake ???

Hey all, I am trying to come to some kind of consensus on a controller decision. I am looking at the Alltrax 4844 and my question is about the plug brake option.

First off, my cart is a 1991 EZGO (series) that I have done a ground up rebuild. I have lifted it 2” and I am using automotive 22” tall tires. The primary usage for this cart is to be basically a NEV at a campground in the mountains. For the most part, the ground is normally (reasonably) level, but there are a few places with 6% to 10% grades for up to 200 yards.

I have consulted a few people (dealers and Alltrax) and they are trying to steer me away from using the plug brake feature. I have done some searching on this site about plug braking and I guess the best response I read was from roady89. He indicated he has seen some A2 buss failures due to severe usage. In my situation, I do not foresee using this as a normal event, but rather, in case of an emergency where the primary brakes may have failed and this would provide some form of backup (short of looking for a tree or large rock) to control the speed. It looks like there is quite a bit of leeway in the amount of braking you can configure in adjusting the braking effect and I am not trying to stop the cart, just slow it down and keep the speed under control in an emergency.

I intend on adding better brakes in the future, but that is not in the picture until the 2012 – 2013 winter off season. After the brake upgrade, I could then go into the CNFG screen and simply uncheck the plug brake feature and then plug braking would no longer be an issue.

For the small cost increase to add the plug feature I am inclined to go ahead and order it with the plug and if it does not work out, then I can just turn it off.

Any input from people with experience with this feature would be greatly appreciated. John
