Default Accessory wiring

Sorry in advance. I can't get the search to work on my phone. I'm sure there is already a thread on wiring accessories but I can't find it. Is it ok to wire 12 volt lights, horn, etc directly to two of the six volt batteries in series? The previous owner had installed a light kit with a fuse directly to the batteries. Does it matter which two I use? I want to install a horn and a fairly low power stereo. I can't imagine that it would affect the run time or power too much. The only thing is that I don't want to prematurely kill two of my batteries. I don't know if the keyed power on the cart is full 36 volts or 12, I would only be using that to turn the stereo on like in a car. I guess I could use a voltage reducer but it seems kind of silly if I can tap 12 volts directly off two batteries without hurting anything. Will the battery charger fry my stereo?

I'll answer the last question first.
If the stereo was turned on while batteries are being charged, it might get fried.
The voltage across two batteries will be about 15.3V near the end of the charging cycle.
If you are using 12V halogen bulbs in your lighting system, they will blow if turned on during charging.

Other than they have to be adjacent in the series, it doesn't matter which two batteries are tapped for 12V.

Tapping the battery pack will imbalance it, how much depends on how many amps are drawn by the accessories.
One way to combat it, is to change with batteries you are using for 12V every time you service your batteries.

Using a voltage reducer or an auxiliary 12V battery avoids the imbalance problem

I know folks have used 36 volt lights to avoid a reducer. Do they make 36 volt stereos?

Never seen one, but if he hooked up the stereo, amp and a set of lights all on one series circuit, he'd be golden. I personally would still use an auxilliary battery for my accessories. I don't want anything leeching off my pack.

No, he would be FRUSTRATED because he would have to run ALL THOSE ITEMS AT ONCE for any of them to work at all. Series circuits are NOT the answer for 12v accessories.

Well, no one gets to have it both ways. If he doesn't want a convertor, and doesn't want to imbalance the pack, and doesn't want to use a separate battery, that's about the only remaining option.

If he hooks up lights, horn, and stereo in a series circuit it won't work right. It is not an option.

Thanks for the feedback "kab", but the only thing I said I didn't want to do was kill two of my batteries prematurely. I don't mind running a voltage reducer, which is what I will probably end up doing. I just wanted to know if I could hook directly to two batteries without screwing something up. And I agree daisy chaining everything in series is not an option.
