Newb with 88' EZ GO needs help -.-

Hi guys, my name is Ryan and I've just recieved my grandmas old EZ GO golf cart thats been sitting a while. I believe it is a 88' from the F1088 model number. I just finished cleaning the outside of it, knocking the dust off, and now Im ready to tackle the batteries

From what I have read I believe it is a 36v cart with (6) 6v batteries. The batteries are U2200 Deep Cycle and I'm told they are less than a year old but have been sitting for a few months. I still need to clean them and all the connections as they are caked with dust.

My question is this what do I need to fill these batteries with exactly? I can see the metal plates inside and filling them back up with distiled water doesn't seem right. Do I need to buy some lead acid and refill them and add water after charging?

Exposing the plates to air is not good. Fill to 1/4 inch over the plates with distilled water and charge asap. Leaving batteries dead and dry is REALLY not good for them. Good Luck and Welcome to BGW

Definately Not! That will ruin the batteries if you do. Just plain Distilled water.

(theres a chance you could revive the batteries if they have not been dry too long, or at least some of the batteries.)

Thank you ScottyB and Rusty for the quick responses.

I took a closer look at each of the batteries tonight this time with a flash light, and noticed that the levels on them are infact above the plates. Just barely though so I will be adding some distiled water to each.

My next challenge is going to be finding a local dealer for a new charger. I noticed that the charger plug on the cart seems to have been changed out from the original, and appears that someone has poorly spliced on a 3-prong connector to the old charger that no longer works. No pic of it but you might get a chuckle if you saw how its practically being held on by electrical tape... -.-

Again thanks for the help I may be back with more questions as I try to get this thing up and running.

Ryan there is a way to charge these up two at a time with a 12v charger, if you have one? Like I said, not good to leave them discharged.

I'm afraid I don't have any chargers around here but I found a dealer on the net thats not too far I'm going to go see hopefully tomorrow if I find the time. -.- I don't have any money into this cart yet since it was given to me. So hopefully I can pick up a decent charger and have the batteries charging up by tomorrow. As long as the batteries aren't done for because I have no idea how long exactly they have been sitting. =\

Also........ Chargers can be repaired....... if thats what you want. It's usually less expensive to repair than to purchase one.

Rusty's right.
You would do well to get a decent 12v charger and charge them in pairs.

The sooner the better.

Hi again guys, I stopped by the shop today and found out the charger isn't actually broken and still works. Woot =D. The batteries were just too low for the charger to kick on. But I managed to get a automotive type charger from my neighbor so I got a few of the batteries charged a couple hours ago, and tried the charger now and its on and charging. The DC Amp meter on the charger is reading 20 amps. I'm going to check back on it in a few hours to make sure it will kick off and to add the water to the batteries. So hopefully will get to test it out late tonight or tomorrow.
