98 txt steering pops and no turning

First post I have a 98 txt and the steering will pop and it does not turn I have examined the steering mechanisms and they appear to be in good condition.After two or three pops it will catch and turn but it does it when backing up mostly but in forward also.Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to BGW!

Your steering rack is probably worn out. It's a pretty easy repair if you have common wrenches and sockets.

All the threads on the rods are good no worn parts on the steering wheel assembly or on the receiver end which mounts to the frame I have it all torn down but cannot see an obvious answer.

Have you opened up the steering housing and inspected the steering rack and pinion gear?

I have it off the cart but the rod shows no signs of the threads being stripped.

Do you have the gear out where the steering shaft connects? It has an internal snap ring and then should pull out. That's probably where the problem is.

ok inside the rack itself it appears to be missing 3 teeth so how much is a steering rack

I'm not sure how much a new one is but I might have a used one laying around if you want me to check.

Edit: I just did a quick search and it looks like a new rack is about $35.00
