Default Controller Varistor 91 Marathon

New to the forum and will probably need a lot of help in the future.

Just got this old cart and trying to get it running. Noted that the controller varistor (resistor) was connected to the A2 and B+ terminals of the controller. The manual shows it connected to the B+ and B- terminals. Anyone who has a 91 marathon that is running can look at theirs and let me know how theirs is connected, it would be appreciated.

THX

Welcome to BGW!

Not sure about a "varistor" but I think the manual you are looking at might be wrong. Connecting a resistor to B+ and B- will end in a big spark and possibly fry your controller and I Know the resistor will not live through it. Actually, I have never seen a resistor connected to ANY terminals on an electronic speed controller.

The varistor is on there, I've attached a picture of it. I have the service manual and shows it connected between B+ and B- of the controller. The cart is not running now and I'm troubleshooting the best I can. Just checking all the wiring and wanted to confirm the placement of the varistor. I ordered another from powellscartsandparts, only place i've seen them.

Thx

The cart will run fine without the varistor....in fact that is the first one I have seen.(for use on a cart) Not saying it doesn't belong there but I have seen alot of carts and NONE of them have had a varistor or had them removed. If you think it should be installed it's your call.

The varistor was indeed factory installed on the early model Marathon controller carts. I think 89-92. Not sure about years.

It protects the controller from high voltage and/or spikes.

Nowadays the high amp fuses take its place and does a better job.

Cart will run fine without it but you should put a fuse in to protect the controller.

Factory install was B+ to B- on the stock Curtis 1204.

Thanks PG! Indeed there is something new to learn everyday. The 89 and 91 I have do not have them either.

Thanks for the info guys. If were to use a fuse instead, where would I install it?
