Default power with key off????

the key was off while i was pulling the labeled pieces of tape off all the wires. i reached my sweaty hand down by the 4 wires coming off the f/r switch and felt a tingle. Nothing major just a tingle. Should these have power with key off? How do i test that all the power is off when my key is off?

Any help is appreciated.

A good start would be to get a wiring diagram for your cart (free! - check the stickies), then study it to see what gets energized with switches in various positions. I know that on my PDS cart my state of charge meter shows voltage with the key switch off, so the key switch does not necessarily shut everything down (on my PDS anyway). Good luck - RAY

Definitely unhook your ground from the pack when playing with the FNR. I was at work on my day off (hotter than Hell's flaming gates out) making new cables for my cart. I was wearing shorts and a wife beater. I was laying across the front where the seat tabs go and loosening up one of the cables to remive it. I was drenched with sweat and ended up contacting one of the positive poles. I'll give you three guesses what part of me was grounded at that particular time. It was far more than a tickle and the last time I have forgotten to unhook the pack when servicing the high current stuff!

So thats what my dad meant when he said " boy you are going to learn a lesson the hard way"
I will have to remember that.

What should have power going to it when the key is off?

Pretty much everything connected to the pack. The key turns the solenoid activation circuit on and off. If it's a big wire you need to fix or adjust, unhook the pack.

I dunno. I'd have to go look at my cart to see if that would make a closed circuit. I am guessing a "yes" on it, though. Almost any time you hook a meter to the pack and jump to an opposing pole elsewhere, you're going to read voltage. I don't have all the current paths in my head, I have to stare at them until I can see which goes where and does what when/ how.

K thanks, I think im just paranoid. The first batterypack i had was so messed up it would drain as soon as unplugged it off the chager. I havent really tested this one after it sat off charge for a few hours.

A fully charged battery pack produces enough power to weld with. Nothing to mess with at all. Keep in mind the power for these carts is basically a closed circuit. That is, there is no part of the system connected outside itself. If you become the outside ground it doesn't have, it will choose you over the system, (path of least resistance).
You can disconnect the system ground at the batteries or the solenoid, (system ground runs directly from the negative on the battry pack to the solenoid). It's best to remove it at the source rather than in the system. Then hit it with a volt meter just to be sure.

Other than that, the tingle was probably just your own excitement getting the best of you. :)
