Default Charger smells and humms

I have a 1997 Ez-GO, the charger smells and humms. The ammeter swings up to only 5 not 20 like before. It as well does not time out. I replaced the capacitor but nothing changed.

Welcome to BGW.

I wouldn't plug it in again then. Why exactly did you replace the cap to begin with? We have a diagram for a charger at the top of the forum in a sticky.

What is the chargers output voltage? Should be around 5 to 7 volts higher than your battery.

The charger is only putting out about 1.5 volts. I replaced the capacity, because I thought it was making the noise and it was rusty. Dont know what voltages I should have present with just the wiring diagram.

The common parts that go wrong with chargers are:
Diodes
Circuit boards
Relays

The humming is normal, it's the plates in the transformer vibrating. The transformer is the most expensive part in the charger.

The one thing that pulls the voltage down on the cart side, is a shorted battery, but you can find that with a volt meter.

If you have low output voltage without having the batterys connected your diode bridge in the charger coud be shorted, With an ohm meter and the charger UNPLUGGED FROM 110 VOLTS find the diodes and read across the. If they are good you will get a low reading in ONE direction only (after swapping the ohm meter leads pos for neg). If you have reading near zero in both directions replace the diodes.

Transformer is bad, buy another charger. If your cap is all rusty water has been present at some point. The charger is coming on and working just not producing any voltage. The charger is supposed to hum, if its not its not working.

Thanks for all of the great help and understanding. This is a great resource. The diodes checked good BUT when I disconnected them to look closer the one spun inside itself. It was most likely breaking down under a load, I hate that. Replaced diode and all is good again. Thanks to all for their help, happy trails.
